5.1 Coil-coated metals are subjected to a wide range of environmental stresses. Corrosion at cut edges, damage points, and fabricated areas can occur and lead to premature failure. Proper preparation and rating of test panels produces meaningful test results that allows comparisons between metal substrates and their pretreatments as well as between coating systems.5.2 Laboratory-prepared test panels give a relative comparison of the substrates and coating systems under test, but may not duplicate all of the stresses imposed on manufactured components. Validation of results on a manufactured product is recommended.5.3 Laboratory accelerated corrosion testing is useful in evaluating relative performance of new and existing metal coatings, pretreatments, and paints. It is up to the participating parties to agree on the significance of these tests to actual use.1.1 This guide has been written specifically for coil-coated metal building products.1.2 This guide applies to preparation, testing, and rating of line-coated and laboratory-coated test panels for the purpose of comparing and ranking the panels for corrosion resistance and other related properties.1.3 Testing may include accelerated laboratory corrosion tests and outdoor exposure tests.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 5.1 Values obtained by flexural tests can provide information with regard to the bond strength of the particular varnish, in combination with a particular wire, when measured under conditions described in this test method.1.1 This test method covers determination of the bond strength of an electrical insulating varnish when applied to a helical coil. The helical coil can be made from bare aluminum or copper wire or from film or fiber-insulated magnet wire. Helical coils made from bare aluminum or bare copper wire will yield values of bond strength for the varnish when applied to bare metal conductors. 4.1 This practice provides for periodic testing for resistance to wet conditions during storage to compare the relative performance of specific combinations of coatings, substrates, and/or pretreatments used on coil-coated metal. The results must be considered relative and do not indicate absolute performance.4.2 When stored improperly, coil-coated building panel stacks can be exposed to rainwater, which flows into gaps between panels by capillary action or gravity, and remains in the gaps because of poor drainage conditions. Such a condition is known as a “wet stack” and may cause blistering and corrosion of the painted surfaces. This practice simulates such improper storage conditions.4.3 Because the outdoor environment shows year-to-year seasonal and geographic climate variation, the absolute amount of degradation based on corrosion and blistering may vary (see Appendix X1).4.4 Temperature, rain, humidity, and storage practices are important factors in wet stack corrosion. Corrosion and blistering will accelerate with increased temperature. The preferred test location is south of 27°N latitude in Florida. Other locations may be used, but differences in temperature and moisture must be considered, and the amount of corrosion and blistering are expected to vary considerably with climate. Test sites must have the instrumentation to measure and record ambient temperature and rainfall as in Practice G7.4.5 This practice is not meant to support the field storage of coil-coated metal in any way other than what is recommended by the manufacturer.1.1 This practice is used to determine the resistance to corrosion and blistering of coil-coated metal products relative to one another when stacked outdoors under direct weathering conditions in which they are wetted by rain and dew.1.2 The coil-coated product variables evaluated may include, but are not limited to, substrates, pretreatments, primers, topcoats, and backers.1.3 This test simulates a stacked building panel bundle stored at a job site in wet outdoor conditions. The results from panels tested during the same time period at the same physical location may be used to compare products as an indicator of relative field performance. Environments with higher temperature and moisture levels accelerate corrosion and blistering.1.4 This standard does not endorse the storage of level (that is, 0° from horizontal) building panels stacks in wet outdoor conditions. Level storage of building panels is not recommended and is used in this standard for evaluation only.1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 3.1 Measurement of dry film thickness of organic coatings by physically cutting through the film and optically observing and measuring the thickness offers the advantage of direct measurement as compared with nondestructive means.3.2 Constituent coating layers of an overall thickness of a coating system can usually be measured individually by this test method, provide adhesion between each layer is sufficient. This crater reveals cross sectional layers appearing as rings, whose width is proportional to the depth of the coating layer(s) and allows for direct calculation of dry film thickness.1.1.1 The Apparatus, Procedure, and Precision and Bias discussions include Method A and Method B. Method A involves the use of an optical measurement apparatus which is no longer commercially available, but remains a valid method of dry film measurement. Method B is a software driven measurement procedure that supersedes Method A.1.2 The substrate may be any rigid, metallic material, such as cold-rolled steel, hot-dipped galvanized steel, aluminum, etc. The substrate must be planar with the exception of substrates exhibiting “coil set,” which may be held level by the use of the clamping tool on the drilling device.NOTE 1: Variations in the surface profile of the substrate may result in misrepresentative organic coating thickness readings. This condition may exist over substrates such as hot-dipped, coated steel sheet. This is true of all “precision cut” methods that are used to determine dry film thickness of organic coatings. This is why several measurements across the strip may be useful if substrate surface profile is suspect.1.3 The range of thickness measurement is 0 to 3.5 mils (0 to 89 μm).NOTE 2: For DFT measurements of films greater than 3.5 mils (89μm), but less than 63 mils (1600 μm), a 45° borer may be used in accordance with this test method, with the exception of 6.8, where the micrometer reading would provide a direct read-out, and division by ten would be unnecessary per 4.3.1 Method A.1.4 Measurements may be made on coil-coated sheet, certain formed products, or on test panels.1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. This specification covers standard specification for steel sheet metallic coated by the hot-dip process and coil-coated with organic films for exterior exposed building products. The substrate shall conform to all requirements of the appropriate specification for the steel sheet product. Material classification includes zinc-coated (galvanized), aluminum-zinc alloy-coated, and aluminum coated steel sheets. The recommended minimum coating mass designations for use in exterior exposed building applications shall be indicated. The properties of the substrate and the organic coating system, combined with the method of forming, shall determine the life expectancy and general appearance of the final product.1.1 This specification covers steel sheet metallic coated by the hot-dip process and coil-coated with organic films for exterior exposed building products. Sheet of this designation is furnished in coils, cut lengths, and formed cut lengths. Building products include corrugated and various types of roll and brake-formed configurations.1.2 The substrate is available in several different metallic-coated steel sheet products as enumerated in 4.1, depending on the requirements of the purchaser.1.3 Coating systems supplied under this specification consist of a primer coat covered by various types and thicknesses of top coats. The combination of primer and top coat is classed as either a two-coat thin-film system or as a two-coat (or more) thick-film system.
