5.1 Tinting strength is an essential property of printing ink dispersions. Although test results on wet drawdowns and tints do not guarantee equivalency of dry printed ink films, they provide useful parameters for quality assurance of established formulations, gaging relative degree of dispersion, and estimating the color value of colorants from different batches, sources, or grades.1.1 These test methods cover procedures for determining the relative tinting strength of paste-type printing ink dispersions by visual or instrumental evaluation of tints prepared by manual or automated mixing.1.2 These test methods are applicable to paste-type printing inks, flushed pigments, and other pigment dispersions that are essentially nonvolatile under ordinary room conditions and for which there is a wet reference standard of the same pigmentation and consistency. With proper choice of tinting base, they are applicable to dispersions of any color, including black and white.NOTE 1: The instrumental procedures for tinting strength are similar in principle to those described in Test Methods D387, D2745, D4838, and D6531.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 4.1 Coarse particles in printing inks reduce the efficiency of the dispersion process, requiring not only extra milling passes, but also frequent changes in pump filters. In printing processes, they may cause excessive wear to metal plates, piling or localized retention of ink on blankets and plates, and water balance problems. Coarse particles also reduce color strength and the gloss of printed matter.4.2 This test method is suitable for quality control. The precision may be improved by the use of a specimen size larger than that prescribed.4.3 Test results are sensitive to the type of washout solvent used. Strong solvents are to be avoided because they may dissolve large particles of resin in the ink vehicle.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the weight concentration of coarse particles in printing ink dispersions by sieve retention.1.2 This test method is applicable to printing inks, flushed pigments, and other pigment dispersions that contain particles larger than 45 μm. With proper choice of solvent, it is applicable both to paste and liquid inks.NOTE 1: This test method is similar in principle to Test Methods D185. This specification establishes the properties and test methods for aqueous dispersions of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resins, and is used to determine if a shipment, lot, or container of PTFE dispersions is suitable for its intended use. These resins are homopolymers of tetrafluoroethylene, or in some cases modified homopolymers containing not more than 1% by weight of other fluoromonomers, and the dispersions are usually stabilized by one or more surfactants. Other non-PTFE materials may be present in total at 5% or less by weight for special purposes. This specification is for virgin materials only, and does not cover PTFE copolymers or filled dispersions, and recycled materials as they are not appropriate for dispersions. Materials shall be appropriately sampled for testing on the following: pH value; solid and surfactant content by gravimetric weight loss; solid content by hydrometer; test for coagulated polymer; specific gravity; and melting characteristics.1.1 This specification covers aqueous dispersions of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resins. 5.1 Each steel rolling mill and operation is particular as to the degree of stability of dispersion required to effect maximum efficiency of lubrication and cooling. This test method is designed to differentiate between coolants for this use. A similar situation is encountered with aluminum rolling mills, but significant differences in designated settling times be required outside the parameter of times used herein. Precision data have only been obtained relative to metastable dispersions for steel mill rolling oils.1.1 This test method covers determination of the dispersion stability of dispersions of rolling oils in water. It is applicable to oils whose water dispersions are stable under moderate agitation, but which show at least some separation upon standing quiescent for 1/2 h, by rising of the oil particles.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 4.1 The life cycle and cleanliness of a recirculating steel mill rolling oil dispersion is affected by the amount of iron present. This iron consists mainly of iron from acid pickling residues and iron from attrition of the steel sheet or rolls during cold rolling. In sampling rolling oils for total iron it is difficult to prevent adherence of iron containing sludge to the sample container. Thus, the accuracy of a total iron determination from an aliquot sample is suspect. This practice provides a means for ensuring that all iron contained in a sample is included in the analysis.4.2 Although less significant, the ash content is still an essential part of the procedure for obtaining a total iron analysis. Generally, the ash will be mostly iron, and in many cases, could be used as a substitute for total iron in determining when to change the dispersion.FIG. 1 Possible Holding Fixture and Assembly System1.1 This test method describes a procedure for sampling and testing dispersions of rolling oils in water from operating steel rolling mills for determination of ash and total iron content.
