This specification covers the material, manufacturing, and specialized property requirements for producing special-purpose aviation distillate test fuels that are intended only for engineering and certification testing of aircraft, engines, and aircraft equipment. It deals with special-purpose test fuels that may be used to evaluate the operability, performance and durability of aviation compression-ignition engines when operating with fuels of marginal performance. Aviation distillate fuel, except as otherwise specified in this specification, shall consist predominantly of refined hydrocarbons derived from conventional sources such as crude oil, natural gas liquid condensates, heavy oil, shale oil, and oil sands. The use of middle distillate fuel blends containing components from other sources is permitted. This specification also lists acceptable additives for aviation distillate special-purpose test fuels. Use of this specification for engineering and certification testing of aircraft is not mandatory. It is directed at civil applications, and maintained as such, but may be adopted for military, government, or other specialized uses.1.1 This specification is intended to support purchasing agencies when formulating specifications for purchases of aviation distillate fuel under contract.1.2 This specification defines specialized property requirements to produce special-purpose aviation distillate test fuels that are intended only for engineering and certification testing of aircraft, engines, and aircraft equipment. Use of this specification for engineering and certification testing of aircraft is not mandatory. Its use is at the discretion of the aircraft manufacturer, engine manufacturer, or certification authorities when determining criteria for validation of aircraft equipment design.1.3 This specification defines special-purpose test fuels that may be used to evaluate the operability, performance and durability of aviation compression-ignition engines when operating with fuels of marginal performance. The aviation distillate test fuels defined in this specification are not intended for general purpose use in aircraft. This specification also lists acceptable additives for aviation distillate special-purpose test fuels.1.4 Specification D8147 is directed at civil applications, and maintained as such, but may be adopted for military, government, or other specialized uses.1.5 This specification can be used as a standard in describing the quality of aviation distillate fuel from production to the aircraft. 1.1 A non-aqueous engine coolant is a glycol, diol, triol, or mixtures thereof, based heat transfer fluid containing less than 1.0 % water when formulated and intended for final use without dilution with water. (Definition from Terminology D4725.)1.2 This specification covers the requirements for fully formulated non-aqueous glycol base coolants for cooling systems of heavy-duty engines. These coolants will function effectively during both winter and summer to provide protection against corrosion, cavitation, freezing, boiling, and excessive viscosity.1.3 This specification is intended to cover the requirements for non-aqueous engine coolants prepared from virgin glycols, diols, or triols, or mixtures thereof.1.4 Coolants meeting this specification exhibit very low vapor pressures under all operating conditions, thereby avoiding the creation and collapse of coolant vapor, the primary cause of pump and cylinder liner cavitation erosion. They may additionally contain additives that provide traditional anti-cavitation erosion coatings but there is no requirement that they must. Non-aqueous engine coolants usually contain one or more carboxylates and do not normally contain nitrites. It is suggested that coolant testing be undertaken at normal manufacturer’s recommended intervals to monitor degradation products. The low vapor pressures inherent in coolants that meet this specification also provide protection from hot surface scaling, as liquid coolant is in contact with all hot metal surfaces of the engine cooling system at all times.1.5 Water is a contaminant to non-aqueous engine coolants and it is suggested that water content be tested periodically with test strips to ideally keep water content of the coolant at 3 % or less. Increases in water cause an undesirable drop in the boiling point. It is instructive that the glassware corrosion testing per this specification is conducted at 6 % corrosive water.1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 4.1 Comparison of brake horsepower developed and of specific fuel consumption rates from engine to engine may be made by use of data based upon a standard for composition of an engine assembly.4.2 The purchaser of the engine assembly will be fully advised of the minimum scope of assembly which the purchaser may rightfully expect to be encompassed by a response to a request for quotation and to be delivered in response to a purchase order unless the engine builder in the proposal or in the offer to sell has clearly advised otherwise.4.3 It will be made apparent to the purchaser that additional auxiliary and accessory equipment will be needed to supplement the defined engine assembly when full consideration is given to the application of the engine assembly as a prime mover in a specific vessel.1.1 This guide covers performance and minimum scope of assembly of all medium speed marine diesel engines intended for main propulsion of single or multiple screw propelled marine vessels or for vessels using other than screw propeller-type main propulsion.1.2 This guide is intended to supplement the regulations of legally constituted regulating authorities. 5.1 The results of this test method may be used to determine nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide emission concentrations from natural gas combustion at stationary sources.5.2 This test method may also be used to monitor emissions during short-term emission tests or periodically in order to optimize process operation for nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide control.1.1 This test method covers the determination of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxygen (O2) concentrations in controlled and uncontrolled emissions from natural gas-fired reciprocating engines, combustion turbines, boilers, and process heaters using portable analyzers with electrochemical sensors. Due to the inherent cross sensitivities of the electrochemical cells, this test method should not be applied to other pollutants or emission sources without a complete investigation of possible analytical interferences and a comparative evaluation with EPA test methods.1.1.1 The procedures and specifications of this test method were originally developed during laboratory and field tests funded by the Gas Research Institute (GRI).2 Comparative emission tests were conducted only on natural gas-fired combustion sources. Subsequently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program conducted further evaluations of electrochemical cell analyzers, which included laboratory tests and field tests on natural gas and diesel-fueled generators. This specification covers the general, physical, chemical, and performance requirements for supplemental coolant additives for use as precharging coolants in the cooling systems of heavy-duty engines. Test solutions shall be standard corrosive water, ethylene or propylene glycol in standard corrosive water, and NaCl dissolved in a solution of glycol in deionized water. These test solutions shall comply to the specific limits for the following requirements: corrosion in glassware mass loss; simulated service test mass loss; foaming; water pump cavitation erosion-corrosion rating; corrosion of cast aluminum alloys at heat-rejecting surfaces; ultrasonic cavitation resistance; supplemental coolant additive-glycol base coolant compatibility; hot surface scaling and deposits resistance; effect on nonmetals; storage stability; ash, chloride ion, and silicon contents; pH in distilled water; reserve alkalinity; and the effect on vehicle finish.1.1 This specification covers the general, physical, chemical, and performance requirements for Supplemental Coolant Additives (SCAs) at a precharged level in the cooling systems of heavy-duty engines.NOTE 1: After precharging, SCAs are customarily used periodically to service cooling systems at 1/4 to 1/3 the precharged dosage to compensate for additives lost through dilution and depletion.1.2 The SCA products meeting this specification are intended for use with water, with recommended dilutions of coolant concentrates, with prediluted engine coolants, or to upgrade the performance of light-duty engine coolants to meet the heav-duty requirements of Specification D6210. This specification covers the requirements for low silicate ethylene glycol base engine coolants for cooling systems of heavy-duty engines. Such engines are typically used in off-highway machinery for agriculture, mining, earth-moving, and construction; Class 5 to 8 over the road trucks and buses; high output stationary engine installations; and locomotive and marine installations. Prediluted coolants shall be prepared using deionized Ethylene glycol base engine coolant concentrates or prediluted ethylene glycol base engine coolants shall be formulated with ethylene glycol. The coolants shall conform to the prescribed physical, chemical, and performance requirements, which include relative density, freezing point, boiling point, ash content, pH, reserve alkalinity, water content, chloride ion content, silicon content, corrosion in glassware, simulated service test, foaming, and cavitation. The color and effect of nonmetals of the coolant shall be evaluated. Prediluted coolant shall also meet the required content of sulfate and iron. Its CaCO3 content shall be tested to determine its hardness.1.1 This specification covers the requirements for low silicate ethylene glycol base engine coolants for cooling systems of heavy-duty engines. When concentrates are used at 40 % to 60 % concentration by volume in water, or when prediluted glycol base engine coolants (50 volume % minimum) are used without further dilution, they will function effectively to provide protection against corrosion, freezing to at least −36.4 °C (−33.5 °F), and boiling to at least 108 °C (226 °F).NOTE 1: This specification is based on the knowledge of the performance of engine coolants prepared from new or virgin ingredients. A separate specification exists (Specification D6210) for heavy-duty engine coolants which may be prepared from recycled or reprocessed used coolant or reprocessed industrial-source ethylene glycol.1.2 Coolants meeting this specification require an initial charge of a supplemental coolant additive (SCA) and require regular maintenance doses of an SCA to continue the protection in certain operating heavy-duty engine cooling systems, particularly those of the wet cylinder liner-in-block design. This specification deals with continuous grain flow carbon and alloy steel crankshaft forgings intended for medium speed diesel and natural gas engines. The steel used in the manufacture of the forgings is required to be vacuum degassed. Heat treatment, which may be done either before or after rough machining, shall consist of normalizing followed by tempering at a subcritical temperature, or austenitizing, liquid quenching and subcritical tempering. Charpy impact and tensile tests, which shall be performed at a frequency of one test per heat treatment load, shall be used to evaluate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, reduction of area, and Brinell hardness requirements of forgings. Chemical composition requirements shall also be examined by heat analysis. Grain size tests and non-destructive magnetic particle examinations shall be conducted as well. This specification covers the methanol fuel blend, M70-M85, for use in ground vehicles that run on automotive spark-ignition engines. Fuels are grouped into three vapor pressure classes (Classes 1, 2, and 3) on the basis of seasonal and geographical volatility. The fuel blends shall undergo chemical analysis for methanol, higher alcohols, hydrocarbon/aliphatic ether, acidity as acetic acid, solvent washed and unwashed gum content, total chlorine as chloride, lead, phosphorus, water, sulfur, and inorganic chloride. The product's appearance shall be clear and bright, visibly free of suspended or precipitated contaminants.1.1 This specification covers the requirements for automotive fuel blends of methanol and gasoline for use in ground vehicles equipped with methanol-capable flexible-fuel, and dedicated methanol spark-ignition engines. Fuel produced to this specification contains 51 % to 85 % by volume methanol. This fuel is sometimes referred to at retail as “M85.” Appendix X1 discusses the significance of the properties specified. Appendix X2 presents the current status in the development of a luminosity test procedure (flame visibility) for methanol fuel blends (M51–M85).1.2 The vapor pressure of methanol fuel blends is varied for seasonal climatic changes. Vapor pressure is increased at lower temperatures to ensure adequate vehicle operability and safety. Methanol content and selection of gasoline blendstocks are adjusted by the blender to meet these vapor pressure requirements.1.3 The United States government has established various programs for alternative fuels. Many of the definitions of alternative fuel used by these programs can be more or less restrictive than the requirements of this specification.
