3.1 A number of laboratory procedures are used to evaluate the effectiveness of fire-retardant and fire-resistant treatments and coatings. In general, these methods measure the three stages of fire development: (1) ignition; (2) flame spread (rate of growth of the fire); and (3) conflagration extent. While all three are of extreme importance, flame spread has been recognized as the main factor associated with testing fire-retardant coatings.3.2 Flame spread ratings based upon Test Method E84 have acquired common acceptance by regulatory agencies, but such large-scale tests are seldom practical during the development or modification of a fire-retardant coating.3.3 This test method provides the relative flame spread of experimental coatings using small test specimens under the conditions established in the 2-foot tunnel. By experimentally calibrating the 2-foot tunnel with similar Test Method E84-rated fire-retardant paint, results obtained by this test method can be used to screen coatings for suitability for testing in the Test Method E84 tunnel.3.3.1 This test method is intended as an experimental tool in evaluating experimental coatings for further development. No direct correlation of results from this test method and the Test Method E84 tunnel have been made or are implied.3.3.2 The results obtained by this test method do not in themselves act as an accurate predictor of performance in Test Method E84 and shall not be used for the purpose of certification to any class of flame spread performance.1.1 This test method determines the protection a coating affords its substrate, and the comparative burning characteristics of coatings by evaluating the flame spread over the surface when ignited under controlled conditions in a small tunnel. This establishes a basis for comparing surface-burning characteristics of different coatings without specific consideration of all the end-use parameters that might affect surface-burning characteristics under actual fire conditions.1.2 In addition to the experimental flame spread rate, the weight of panel consumed, time of afterflaming and afterglow, char dimensions and index, and height of intumescence can be measured in this test. However, a relationship should not be presumed among these measurements.1.3 This standard is used to determine certain fire-test responses of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions by using results obtained from fire-test response standards. The results obtained from using this standard do not by themselves constitute measures of fire hazard or fire risk.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 5.1 This test method provides a means to quantify the abrasion resistance of dimension stone and may be related to end-use performance, or used to comparatively rank material performance, or both. The resistance of dimension stone to abrasion, as measured on a testing machine in the laboratory, is generally only one of several factors contributing to wear performance as experienced in the actual use of the material. Calculation of predicted life should not be based on specific abrasion data alone.5.2 The resistance of dimension stone to abrasion may be affected by factors including test conditions; type of abradant; pressure between the specimen and abradant; mounting of the specimen; and type, kind, or amount of finishing materials.5.3 Abrasion tests utilizing the rotary platform abraser may be subject to variation due to changes in the abradant during the course of specific tests. Depending on abradant type and test specimen, the abrading wheel surface may change (that is, become clogged) due to pick-up of finishing or other materials from test specimens. To reduce this variation, the abrading wheels may require resurfacing.1.1 This test method covers the establishment of an index of abrasion resistance by determination of loss of volume resulting from abrasion of dimension stone as described in Terminology C119 and is based on Guide G195.1.2 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. 5.1 The purpose of this test method is to provide a measurable criterion of performance defining the level of cut resistance to the cutting action of a saw chain provided by foot protective devices.5.2 The protection which can be demonstrated by the foot protective devices tested in accordance with this test method is achieved by: (1) the material resisting cutting when put in contact with the moving saw chain; (2) a part of the material being drawn into the saw chain and drive mechanism to block the saw chain movement; (3) the materials resisting cutting and absorbing rotational energy so that saw chain speed can be slowed down sufficiently to stop the movement of the saw chain; or (4) any combination of these.5.3 In case of a dispute arising from differences in reported test results, when using this test method for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, the purchaser and the supplier should perform comparative tests to determine if there is a statistical bias between their laboratories. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigation of bias. As a minimum, the two parties should take a group of test specimens from the same lot of components to be evaluated. The test specimens should then be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. If a bias is found, either its cause must be determined and corrected, or the purchaser and the supplier must agree to interpret future test results in light of the known bias.1.1 This test method measures cut resistance of foot protective devices that are designed to protect the foot when operating a chainsaw.1.2 This test method may be used to test for compliance to minimum performance requirements in established safety standards.1.2.1 By agreement between the purchaser and the supplier, or as required by established safety standards, this test method can be used to determine any one or both of the following: (1) chain speed 50 (CS50), (2) success/failure (jamming/chain stop) at specified chain speed.1.3 This test method may be used to determine levels of protection for areas of coverage as stipulated in established safety standards.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.NOTE 1: The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other, without combining values in any way.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This test method also provides one element in comparing stones of the same type.NOTE 1: Test Method C1353/C1353M is an alternative method to evaluate abrasion resistance for stone subjected to foot traffic, but is not applicable for hard and coarse-grained stones such as granite. 5.1 By exposure to sufficient foot traffic, this practice can be applied to any pile yarn floor covering which undergoes changes in surface appearance.5.1.1 This practice does not simulate surface appearance changes due to soiling, pivoting, or rolling traffic, or traffic on stairs.1.1 This practice covers the trafficking of pile yarn floor coverings in a laboratory in order to effect a change in surface appearance as a result of exposure to foot traffic under controlled conditions. This specification prescribes the minimum requirements for the design, performance, testing, and certification of footwear and foot protective devices that, when worn by operators of power chain saws, shall provide cut resistance protection to their feet, and thereby reducing foot injuries caused by close contact with the running saw chain. The footwear and foot protective devices shall be constructed with suitable fit and flexibility so as to provide sufficient foot comfort and normal maneuverability to perform intended tasks, while maintaining satisfactory functionality and efficacy for the duration of its regular use throughout seasonal climatic variations. 4.1 These test methods contain requirements to evaluate the performance of footwear for the following:4.1.1 Impact resistance for the toe area of footwear (I),4.1.2 Compression resistance for the toe area of footwear (C),4.1.3 Metatarsal protection that reduces the chance of injury to the metatarsal bones at the top of the foot (Mt),4.1.4 Conductive properties which reduce hazards that may result from static electricity buildup, and reduce the possibility of ignition of explosives and volatile chemicals (Cd),4.1.5 Electric hazard to protect the wearer when accidentally stepping on live electric wires (EH),4.1.6 Static dissipative properties to reduce hazards that result from a build up of static charge where there is an underlying risk of accidental contact with live electrical circuits (SD), and4.1.7 Puncture resistance footwear devices (PR).4.2 Any changes to the original components of safety toe footwear such as replacing or adding after-market footbeds/inserts could cause non-compliance to any or all parts of this standard rendering the ASTM label invalid.
