5.1 This test method is used to demonstrate compliance with state, EPA as well as relevant international regulations for PM emissions from light-duty vehicles.5.1.1 The EPA Tier 3 and CARB LEV III regulations specify FTP and SFTP PM emission standards for light-duty vehicles.1.1 This test method covers a procedure for the gravimetric determination of particulate matter (PM) collected from diluted light duty vehicle exhaust. It is applicable to mass rates from 0.32 to 32 mg/km (0.2 to 20 mg/mile).1.2 Diluted exhaust is passed through pre-weighed filter media which is re-weighed after sampling. The difference in weight is used to determine particulate mass, which is then used with other data to calculate the distance specific emissions.1.3 The particulate materials that are measured using this test method are generated by a vehicle following the PM standard applicable portions of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) driving schedules and test procedures for determining the emissions of light duty vehicles. For other jurisdictions, consult regional regulations for applicability of these test procedures. This test method covers determination of the density of freshly mixed concrete and gives formulas for calculating the unit weight, yield or relative yield, cement content, and air content of the concrete. Yield is defined as the volume of concrete produced from a mixture of known quantities of the component materials. The test method shall use the following apparatuses: balance or scale; tamping rod, which is a round straight steel rod having the tamping end rounded to a hemispherical tip; internal vibrator which may have rigid of flexible shafts, preferably powered by electric motors; measure, which is a cylindrical container made of steel or other suitable metal specified herein; strike-off plate; mallet; and scoop of a size large enough so each amount of concrete obtained from the sampling receptacle is representative and small enough so it is not spilled during placement in the measure.1.1 This test method covers determination of the density (see Note 1) of freshly mixed concrete and gives formulas for calculating the yield, cement content, and air content of the concrete. 5.1 This test method provides the user with a procedure to calculate the density of freshly mixed CLSM for determination of compliance with specifications, for determining mass/volume relationships or conversions such as those found in purchase agreements, and also for quality control purposes.5.2 This test method is intended to assist the user for quality control purposes and when specified to determine compliance for air content, yield, and cement content of freshly mixed CLSM.5.3 This test method is not meant to predict the air content of hardened CLSM, which may be either higher or lower than that determined by this test method.5.4 This test is one of a series of quality control tests that can be performed on CLSM during construction to monitor compliance with specification requirements. The other tests that can be used during construction control are Test Methods D4832, D6024/D6024M, and D6103.NOTE 2: The quality of the results produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection/ and the like. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D3740 does not in itself ensure reliable results. 3.1 This guide uses a weight-loss method of wear determination for the polymeric components used with hip joint prostheses, using serum or demonstrated equivalent fluid for lubrication, and running under a dynamic load profile representative of the human hip-joint forces during walking (1,2).5 The basis for this weight-loss method for wear measurement was originally developed (3) for pin-on-disk wear studies (see Practice F732) and has been extended to total hip replacements (4,5) femoral-tibial knee prostheses (6), and to femoropatellar knee prostheses (6,7).3.2 While wear results in a change in the physical dimensions of the specimen, it is distinct from dimensional changes due to creep or plastic deformation, in that wear generally results in the removal of material in the form of polymeric debris particles, causing a loss in weight of the specimen.3.3 This guide for measuring wear of the polymeric component is suitable for various simulator devices. These techniques can be used with metal, ceramic, carbon, polymeric, and composite counter faces bearing against a polymeric material (for example, polyethylene, polyacetal, and so forth). This weight-loss method, therefore, has universal application for wear studies of total hip replacements that feature polymeric bearings. This weight-loss method has not been validated for high-density material bearing systems, such as metal-metal, carbon-carbon, or ceramic-ceramic. Progressive wear of such rigid bearing combinations generally has been monitored using a linear, variable-displacement transducers or by other profilometric techniques.1.1 This guide describes a laboratory method using a weight-loss technique for evaluating the wear properties of materials or devices, or both, which are being considered for use as bearing surfaces of human-hip-joint replacement prostheses. The hip prostheses are evaluated in a device intended to simulate the tribological conditions encountered in the human hip joint, for example, use of a fluid such as bovine serum, or equivalent pseudosynovial fluid shown to simulate similar wear mechanisms and debris generation as found in vivo, and test frequencies of 1 Hz or less.1.2 Since the hip simulator method permits the use of actual implant designs, materials, and physiological load/motion combinations, it can represent a more physiological simulation than basic wear-screening tests, such as pin-on-disk (see Practice F732) or ring-on-disk (see ISO 6474).1.3 It is the intent of this guide to rank the combination of implant designs and materials with regard to material wear-rates, under simulated physiological conditions. It must be recognized, however, that there are many possible variations in the in vivo conditions, a single laboratory simulation with a fixed set of parameters may not be universally representative.1.4 The reference materials for the comparative evaluation of candidate materials, new devices, or components, or a combination thereof, shall be the wear rate of extruded or compression-molded, ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene (see Specification F648) bearing against standard counter faces [stainless steel (see Specification F138); cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy (see Specification F75); thermomechanically processed cobalt chrome (see Specification F799); alumina ceramic (see Specification F603)], having typical prosthetic quality, surface finish, and geometry similar to those with established clinical history. 5.1 Low operating temperature fuel cells such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) require high purity hydrogen for maximum material performance and lifetime. Measurement of particulates in hydrogen is necessary for assuring a feed gas of sufficient purity to satisfy fuel cell and internal combustion system needs as defined in SAE J2719. The particulates in hydrogen fuel for fuel cell vehicles (FCV) and gaseous hydrogen powered internal combustion engine vehicles may adversely affect pneumatic control components, such as valves, or other critical system components. Therefore, the concentration of particulates in the hydrogen fuel should be limited as specified by ISO 14687-2, SAE J2719, or other hydrogen fuel quality specifications.5.2 Although not intended for application to gases other than hydrogen fuel, techniques within this test method can be applied to gas samples requiring determination of particulate concentration.1.1 This test method is primarily intended for gravimetric determination of particulate concentration in hydrogen intended as a fuel for fuel cell or internal combustion engine powered vehicles. 5.1 The measurement of particulate matter and collected residue emission rates is an important test method widely used in the practice of air pollution control. Particulate matter measurements after control devices are necessary to determine total emission rates into the atmosphere.5.1.1 These measurements, when approved by national, state, provincial, or other regional agencies, are often required for the purpose of determining compliance with regulations and statutes.5.1.2 The measurements made before and after control devices are often necessary to demonstrate conformance with regulatory or contractual performance specifications.5.2 The collected residue obtained with this test method is also important in characterizing stack emissions. However, the utility of these data is limited unless a chemical analysis of the collected residue is performed.5.3 These measurements also can be used to calibrate continuous particulate emission monitoring systems by correlating the output of the monitoring instruments with the data obtained by using this test method.1.1 This test method2 covers a method for the measurement of particulate matter (dust) concentration in emission gases in the concentrations below 20 mg/m3 standard conditions, with special emphasis around 5 mg/m3.1.2 To meet the requirements of this test method, the particulate sample is weighed to a specified level of accuracy. At low dust concentrations, this is achieved by:1.2.1 Precise and repeatable weighing procedures,1.2.2 Using low tare weight weighing dishes,1.2.3 Extending the sampling time at conventional sampling rates, or1.2.4 Sampling at higher rates at conventional sampling times (high-volume sampling).1.3 This test method differs from Test Method D3685/D3685M by requiring the mass measurement of filter blanks, specifying weighing procedures, and requiring monitoring of the flue gas flow variability over the testing period. It requires that the particulate matter collected on the sample filter have a mass at least five times a positive mass difference on the filter blank. High volume sampling techniques or an extension of the sampling time may be employed to satisfy this requirement. This test method has tightened requirements on sampling temperature fluctuations and isokinetic sampling deviation. This test method has eliminated the in-stack filtration technique.1.4 This test method may be used for calibration of automated monitoring systems (AMS).
