This specification covers extruded and cast sheet, plate, rod and tubular bar manufactured from nylon or monomers. Requirements necessary to identify particular characteristics important to specialized applications may be described by using the given classification system. The use of recycled plastics is allowed in the specification. 3.1 The purpose of this guide is to assist the user in developing procedures to determine the serviceability of rope based upon visual and tactile inspection of the rope and the rope history as documented in the rope log.3.2 This guide is intended for use by experienced personnel deemed qualified by the user to assess the viability of rope, according to the specific needs of that user.1.1 This guide covers procedures to assist in the management and care of kernmantle nylon, polyester, or nylon/polyester, or both kernmantle ropes by rescue personnel.1.2 This guide provides information intended to assist qualified, experienced personnel in establishing procedures for determining whether a rope should be placed into or returned to service. Such procedures may be used to assist in determining serviceability of used rescue ropes. Other factors which may not be included in this guide may also need to be considered when evaluating ropes.NOTE 1: Interpretation of the terms “qualified” and “experienced” when referring to individuals inspecting ropes may be debatable. Because rope evaluation is a subjective practice, it is in the best interest of the user to clearly define the needs of the user, and then to train personnel according to those needs. Needs and priorities may vary greatly between users.1.2.1 A rope which has been used in any manner should not be returned to service without first undergoing a thorough inspection to include rope log review, visual inspection, and tactile inspection.1.2.2 It is the responsibility of the user to understand that evaluation of a used rope is a subjective process. Due to the strength and longevity of kernmantle ropes presently used in rescue operations, it is perfectly reasonable, and even advisable, for these ropes to be reused on future operations unless the rope is physically compromised in some way. If the user chooses to reuse ropes, then the user should also establish specific guidelines, including and possibly in addition to those set forth in this guide, and provide training for personnel who will be responsible for examination of ropes.1.3 This standard does not imply approval of any specific type of rescue rope, nor does it purport to ensure the ability of any rope to function as desired. 5.1 The depth of color achieved in dyeing fabric according to this practice is relative to the amount of sizing in the fabric. This practice employs a chromatic staining scale from 1 to 5 which is inversely proportional to the relative amount of sizing in the fabric. This specification covers the general requirements for nylon stuffing tubes and packing assemblies. Nylon stuffing tubes are intended for making electric cable penetrations in marine shipboard enclosures for electrical equipment. The following types are suitable for thin-wall enclosures up to a certain thickness and thick-wall enclosures, bulkheads, and decks of also of a certain thickness. Nylon stuffing tubes shall be classified into four types: Type 1 with straight, unified form thread, Type 2 with 90°, unified form thread, Type 3 with NPT, American standard pipe thread and Type 4 with Y, unified form thread. Materials used for the manufacture of these stuffing tubes and packing assemblies shall include polyamide or nylon and synthetic rubber or neoprene. The sizes and dimensions of stuffing tubes and packing assemblies are completely described. In order determine properties such as vibration resistance, ruggedness, and seal effectiveness of stuffing tubes, the following tests shall be performed: vibration test, mechanical abuse test, and level of effectiveness test. In terms of physical appearance, stuffing tubes shall be free from warp, cracks, chipped edges or surfaces, blisters, uneven surfaces, scratches, dents, and heat marks. They shall be free from fins, burrs, and unsightly finish caused by chipping, filing, or grinding without subsequent buffing or polishing. All molded nylon parts shall be cleaned thoroughly of annealing mediums. Packing assemblies shall be free of voids, pin holes, flash, or other imperfections, that may impair their serviceability.1.1 This specification covers the general requirements for nylon stuffing tubes and packing assemblies. Nylon stuffing tubes are intended for making electric cable penetrations in marine shipboard enclosures for electrical equipment. This classification system covers nylon injection and extrusion materials. Nylon materials are classified into groups according to their composition. Groups are further classified into classes and grades. Grades are identified by a single letter that indicates the reinforcement or filler used and two digits, in multiples of 5, which indicate the nominal quantity in weight percent. Specific requirements for variations of nylon materials shall be shown by a six-character designator. Suffixes shall be used for those properties not covered by basic requirements. Specific suffix requirements shall always take precedence over basic requirements. Tensile strength, flexural strength, Izod impact resistance, deflection temperature, and density shall be done on test pieces based on injection molded ISO 3167 type multipurpose test specimens. Conditioning, preparation, testing, inspection, packaging, and marking shall be in conformance to the requirements in this standard classification system.1.1 This classification system covers nylon materials suitable for injection molding and extrusion. Some of these compositions are also suitable for compression molding and application from solution.1.2 The properties included in this classification system are those required to identify the compositions covered. There may be other requirements necessary to identify particular characteristics important to specialized applications. These may be specified by using the suffixes as given in Section 5.1.3 This classification system and subsequent line call-out (specification) are intended to provide a means of calling out plastic materials used in the fabrication of end items or parts. It is not intended for the selection of materials. Material selection should be made by those having expertise in the plastic field after careful consideration of the design and the performance required of the part, the environment to which it will be exposed, the fabrication process to be employed, the costs involved, and the inherent properties of the material other than those covered by this classification system.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.1.5 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 11, of this classification system.
