This method has been prepared to detect and quantitate nitrogen-containing compounds such as N-formylmorpholine (4-formylmorpholine, Chemical Abstract Service numbers (CAS) No. 250-37-6) or 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) (CAS) No. 872-50-42 at a concentration of 1.0 mgN/kg or less in aromatic hydrocarbons used or produced in manufacturing processes. These nitrogen-containing compounds are undesirable in the finished aromatic products and may be the result of the aromatic extraction process. This test method may be used in setting specifications for determining the total nitrogen content in aromatic hydrocarbons. Note 1—Virtually all organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds will be detected by this technique. This technique will not detect diatomic nitrogen and it will produce an attenuated response when analyzing compounds (that is, s-triazine and azo compounds, etc.) that form nitrogen gas (N2) when decomposed. This test method requires the use of reduced pressure at the detector. Loss of vacuum or pressure fluctuations impact the sensitivity of the detector and the ability to determine nitrogen concentrations less than 1 mg/kg.1.1 This test method covers the determination of total nitrogen (organic and inorganic) in aromatic hydrocarbons, their derivatives and related chemicals. 1.2 This test method is applicable for samples containing nitrogen from 0.2 to 2 mgN/kg. For higher nitrogen concentrations refer to Test Method D 4629.1.2.1 The detector response of this technique within the specified scope of this test method is linear with nitrogen concentration.1.3 The following applies to all specified limits in this test method: for purposes of determining conformance with this test method, an observed value or a calculated value shall be rounded off "to the nearest unit" in the last right-hand digit used in expressing the specification limit, in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E 29.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see Section 9.

5.1 The measurement of total moisture is required to determine whether coal meets commercial or environmental specifications, or both. Within the limitations prescribed in the scope, this practice describes a procedure for determination of total moisture that requires less time than the procedures described in Test Method D3302/D3302M.1.1 This practice covers a single-stage procedure for the determination of total moisture less than 15 % in coal reduced to 2.36 mm [No. 8 sieve] topsize. This practice is for determination of total moisture only. Materials subjected to this test shall not be used in the determination of other test parameters. It is recognized that the conditions of the test can increase the potential for significant oxidation effects on some coals. If the oxidation potential is of concern, the use of this single-stage method shall involve prior agreement between the parties involved. This practice shall not be construed as the referee standard practice for total moisture. For referee purposes, users of this practice are referred to Test Method D3302/D3302M for moisture determination methods which are not as susceptible to oxidation effects.1.2 Statistical analysis of data from several sources indicates that at a 95 % confidence level, there is statistically no difference between the mean value of the results obtained by Practice D2961/D2961M and Test Method D3302/D3302M (that is, no bias is detected between the two methods at the 95 % confidence level) for moisture levels between 1.4 % and 15.8 %. These two standards were not compared in this study for some ranks of coal including lignite and anthracite.21.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 This test method is useful to detect and quantify nitrogen-containing compounds at a concentration of 0.1 to 1.2 mg N/kg in light aromatic hydrocarbons used or produced in manufacturing process. These nitrogen-containing compounds are undesirable in finished aromatic products and may be used in setting specification for determining the total nitrogen content in aromatic hydrocarbons.5.2 This test method requires the use of reduced pressure at the detector. Loss of vacuum or pressure fluctuations impact the sensitivity of the detector and the ability to determine nitrogen concentrations less than 1 mg N/kg.1.1 This test method covers the determination of total nitrogen in aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene.1.2 This test method is applicable to samples with nitrogen concentrations up to 1.2 mg/kg. The Limit of Detection (LOD) is 0.04 mg/kg N and the Limit of Quantitation (LOQ) is 0.13 mg/kg N. For higher nitrogen concentrations refer to Test Method D4629. With careful analytical technique, this method can be used to successfully analyze concentrations below the current scope (see Appendix X1).NOTE 1: LOD and LOQ were calculated using data in ASTM Research Report RR:D16-1044.1.3 In determining the conformance of the test results using this method to applicable specifications; results shall be rounded off in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see Section 9.1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 This test method is used for the determination of the distillation characteristics of petroleum products, biodiesel, and fractions that may decompose if distilled at atmospheric pressure. This boiling range, obtained at conditions designed to obtain approximately one theoretical plate fractionation, can be used in engineering calculations to design distillation equipment, to prepare appropriate blends for industrial purposes, to determine compliance with regulatory rules, to determine the suitability of the product as feed to a refining process, or for a host of other purposes.5.2 The boiling range is directly related to viscosity, vapor pressure, heating value, average molecular weight, and many other chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. Any of these properties can be the determining factor in the suitability of the product in its intended application.5.3 Petroleum product specifications often include distillation limits based on data by this test method.5.4 Many engineering design correlations have been developed on data by this test method. These correlative methods are used extensively in current engineering practice.1.1 This test method covers the determination, at reduced pressures, of the range of boiling points for petroleum products and biodiesel that can be partially or completely vaporized at a maximum liquid temperature of 400 °C. Both a manual method and an automatic method are specified.1.2 In cases of dispute, the referee test method is the manual test method at a mutually agreed upon pressure.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses after SI units are provided for information only and are not considered standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific warning statements, see 6.1.4, 6.1.8.1, 10.11, and A3.2.1.1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
