5.1 The purpose of this practice is to provide designers, engineers, manufactures, owners, and operators with criteria and references for use in designing, inspecting, and operating patron transportation conveyor systems which are integral with a water related ride or device.1.1 This practice applies to the classification, design, manufacture, construction, and operation of patron transportation conveyors, integral with the operation of water related amusement rides or devices as scoped in Practice F2376-21a.1.2 This practice applies to conveyors used for patron loading/unloading or to transport patrons on rafts, tubes, or other vehicles. Loading, sequencing, transitioning, starting, and unloading conveyors that carry patrons are included in the scope of this practice.1.3 This practice shall affect new conveying systems or major modifications of conveyors used in an amusement ride or attraction.1.4 This practice includes an appendix (non-mandatory), which provides additional information (for example, rationale, background, interpretations, drawings, commentary, and so forth) to improve the user’s understanding and application of the criteria presented in this practice. The appendix information shall not be interpreted as mandatory design criteria.1.5 Units—The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. 5.1 This practice provides a means for obtaining a quantitative estimate of a pavement property defined as ride quality or rideability using longitudinal profile measuring equipment.5.1.1 The Ride Number (RN) is portable because it can be obtained from longitudinal profiles obtained with a variety of instruments.5.1.2 The RN is stable with time because true RN is based on the concept of a true longitudinal profile, rather than the physical properties of particular type of instrument.5.2 Ride quality information is a useful input to the pavement manage systems (PMS) maintained by transportation agencies.5.2.1 The subjective ride quality estimate produced by this practice has been determined (6) to be highly correlated (r = 0.92) with measured subjective ride quality and to produce a low standard estimate of error (0.29 RN units) for the ride quality estimate.5.2.2 The subjective ride quality estimates produced by this practice were found to be not significantly different with respect to pavement type, road class, vehicle size, vehicle speed (within posted speed limits), and regionality over the range of variables included in the experiment (1-4).5.2.3 The subjective ride quality estimates produced by this practice have been found to be good predictors of the need of non-routine road maintenance for the various road classifications (3).5.3 The use of this practice to produce subjective ride quality estimates from measured longitudinal profile eliminates the need for expensive ride panel studies to obtain the same ride quality information.1.1 This practice covers the mathematical processing of longitudinal profile measurements to produce an estimate of subjective ride quality, termed Ride Number (RN).1.2 The intent of this practice is to provide the highway community a standard practice for the computing and reporting of an estimate of subjective ride quality for highway pavements.1.3 This practice is based on an algorithm developed in National Cooperative Highway Research Project (NCHRP) 1–23 (1, 2),2 two Ohio Department of Transportation ride quality research projects (3, 4), and work presented in Refs (5, 6).1.4 The computed estimate of subjective ride quality produced by this practice was named Ride Number (RN) in NCHRP Research Project 1–23 (1, 2) to differentiate it from other measures of ride quality computed from longitudinal profile. 4.1 The user of this standard shall be required to review and comply with the referenced “core” ASTM F24 Committee standards in 2.1 of this standard. Modified or alternate requirements to those standards may be required in this standard.4.1.1 Amusement railway sub-systems may be built to various scales, that is, rolling stock maybe to one scale and the track to another but have common gauge. The railroad’s documentation or maintenance manuals shall identify the railroad standards of the respective subsystems/interfaces.4.1.2 The Designer/Engineer’s requirements shall consider the track equipment manufacturer’s and rolling stock manufacturer’s requirements and shall determine their appropriate interfaces.1.1 This standard applies to design, manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance, and inspection of permanent amusement railway ride(s) that have a track gauge greater than or equal to 12 in. (305 mm) measured between the heads of the rails and their related devices and facilities, for example, bridges, tunnels, and signal support structures, excluding rolling stock. This “track” specific standard provides requirements which are not covered in the “core” or “supporting” standards of the ASTM F24 committee.1.2 This standard does not apply to track rides, such as roller coasters, that may resemble railways.1.3 This standard does not apply to funiculars as defined in ANSI B77.2 (2020) or BS EN 1907 (2017).1.4 This standard does not apply to Amusement Railway Rides and their associated track, devices and facilities that are manufactured and intended for use as a portable amusement ride or attraction.1.5 This standard does not apply to permanently installed amusement railway rides and tourist railways, and their associated track, devices and facilities that are under the jurisdiction of the United States Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in whole or part, or national equivalent.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 5.1 A primary responsibility of highway agencies is the construction and maintenance of highway pavements in a condition (including ride quality) perceived to be satisfactory by the user community. The ability to quickly, easily, and economically acquire an objective standard numeric (rideability index) that will estimate the current level of satisfaction for lengths of pavement is desirable for determining when an acceptable level of ride quality does not exist and corrective measures are required.5.1.1 This guide describes a procedure to produce subjectively derived, numerical ride quality ratings for each sample of a broad spectrum of highway pavement sections based on a standard numerical scale (0 to 5, described herein). These rating estimates may be considered to be closely correlated to the collective qualitative judgments of the total related highway user population.5.1.2 The MPR data set thus obtained can be useful in testing various hypothesized deterministic functions of certain physical parameters of sections of pavement, such as the measured longitudinal profile, as estimators of the ride quality rating the user population might assign to any particular member of the total relevant inventory of highway pavement sections.5.1.3 Objective, quantitative, easily measurable rideability index data shown to be highly correlated with MPRs are a valuable resource for monitoring the performance of highway pavement construction, maintenance, and repair operations.1.1 This guide covers a procedure for obtaining subjective numerical ride ratings for a group of representative highway pavement sections having a broad spectrum of physical characteristics.1.2 The intent of this guide is to describe a procedure for generating a set of comparatively scaled ride ratings, subjectively derived, for a subgroup of pavement sections having a ride quality distribution approximating the general population of highways of interest. This set will provide statistical estimates of the average subjective ride ratings which would be obtained for the same group of pavement sections if the entire population of users could be interrogated.1.3 For the data to be a reasonable representation of the average ride quality judgments of the total highway user community for the total population of highway pavements, certain sampling theory precepts must be observed; the size of the rating panel, the selection of its members from the user community, the method of quantifying the individual judgments, as well as the selection of the sample pavement sections are all important areas to be considered.1.4 An important use of the resulting ride quality data would be to determine the ability of various hypothesized deterministic functions of physical parameters of the pavement samples, such as measured longitudinal profile, and so forth, to provide an estimate of subjective ride quality judgments.1.5 This guide is based on guidelines described in Appendix F of NCHRP Report 275,2 and in Appendix E of NCHRP Report 308.31.6 The values stated in both inch-pound and SI units are to be regarded separately as the standard. The purpose of this guide is to provide a uniform procedure under which the amusement ride and device industry can organize data related to injuries and illnesses. This classification system may be used to formulate statistical information within the categories provided and will facilitate the analysis of injury and illness incidents.
