5.1 In form-fill operations, sealed areas of packages are frequently subject to disruptive forces while still hot. If the hot seals have inadequate resistance to these forces, breakage can occur during the packaging process. These test methods measure hot seal strength and can be used to characterize and rank materials in their ability to perform in commercial applications where this quality is critical.1.1 These two test methods cover laboratory measurement of the strength of heatseals formed between thermoplastic surfaces of flexible webs, immediately after a seal has been made and before it cools to ambient temperature (hot tack strength).1.2 These test methods are restricted to instrumented hot tack testing, requiring a testing machine that automatically heatseals a specimen and immediately determines strength of the hot seal at a precisely measured time after conclusion of the sealing cycle. An additional prerequisite is that the operator shall have no influence on the test after the sealing sequence has begun. These test methods do not cover non-instrumented manual procedures employing springs, levers, pulleys and weights, where test results can be influenced by operator technique.1.3 Two variations of the instrumented hot tack test are described in these test methods, differing primarily in two respects: (a) rate of grip separation during testing of the sealed specimen, and (b) whether the testing machine generates the cooling curve of the material under test, or instead makes a measurement of the maximum force observed following a set delay time. Both test methods may be used to test all materials within the scope of these test methods and within the range and capacity of the machine employed. They are described in Section 4.1.4 SI units are preferred and shall be used in referee decisions. 5.1 This test method may be used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments of garments with attached buttons.5.2 This test method may be used to determine the compatibility of tack attached buttons or prong fastener attached buttons to fabrics used in apparel. 5.1 The tack-free time is a measure of the surface cure time and may generally be correlated to a variety of useful parameters such as the time interval before the sealant (1) resists damage by touch or light surface contact, (2) resists job-site or airborne dirt pick-up, (3) resists impinging rainfall.5.2 The tack-free time is sometimes used as an on-the-job quality assurance test. A quality product that is consistent and reproducible will generally fall within a maximum and minimum tack-free time.5.3 This test for tack-free time can be used at any temperature and humidity. 5.1 Characterizing tack for different prepreg materials, test parameters, surface combinations, and environmental conditions provides insight for optimizing process parameters (particularly deposition rate and deposition temperature) for industrial automated material placement processes.5.2 Results obtained through employing the continuous application-and-peel method, as described in studies (1-3),3 reflect the effects of adhesion forming between prepreg layers or between prepreg and metal substrate, and loss of cohesion within the resin in the prepreg, upon tack. This test method allows the adhesive properties of B-staged resin to be explored in a manner relevant for dynamic material deposition processes, where timescales for bonding of prepreg to the substrate or previously placed prepreg layers are short prior to curing. In contrast, Test Methods D3167 and D1781 determine the peel resistance of adhesive bonds for adhesion measurement and process control of laminated or bonded adherends.5.3 The test method is suitable to quantify tack of prepregs for acceptance and process control and can be extended to determine resin shelf life or to adjust process parameters to resin out-time. Direct comparison of different resins/prepreg or processes can only be made when specimen preparation and test conditions are identical.1.1 This test method covers measurement of adhesion (tack) between partially cured (B-staged) composite prepreg and a substrate in a peel test, under specified conditions. The test may be conducted to measure tack between a flexible layer of prepreg and another prepreg layer bonded to a rigid substrate (Method I) or a rigid metal substrate (Method II). 5.1 The rolling-ball tack test is fast, easy to run, and requires little investment in equipment and little operator training. This test is intended primarily for quality control use since it demonstrates good reproducibility within a single laboratory and ability to detect batch-to-batch variations accurately if adhesive film thickness is held constant. This test method describes the determination of the tack-free time property of caulking compounds and sealants. The method is applicable to both gun and knife grades. Requirements for the apparatus including the cabinet or room, brass sheet, template, steel sheets, plastic strips (polyethylene strips), spatula, and knife blade are given. Methyl ethyl ketone, ethylene dichloride, or similar solvent shall be used. The test specimen shall be sampled from a previously unopened container and shall be thoroughly mixed before using. The method of preparation and conditioning of the test specimen, and the test procedure are detailed. The tack of a given adhesive varies depending on the backing (generally, stiffer backings lead to higher values).5.3 Theses test methods are suitable for quality control and research purposes.5.4 Test Method A (using Tensile Tester) makes use of a specimen strip 7 in. (175 mm) in length. Both the FINAT FTM 9 “Quick Stick” Tack Measurement Test and the TLMI L-IB2 Tensile Tester Loop Tack Test also use a specimen strip of that length.5.5 Test Method B (using Loop Tack Tester) makes use of a specimen strip five in. (125 mm) in length. That is the only length specimen strip that fits properly in the loop tack tester.5.6 If the adhesive is not already otherwise coated, these test methods incorporate the use of a clear 2 mil (0.05 mm) polyester (PET) film backing for specimen preparation. Use of other backing materials changes performance of the specimen to be tested.1.1 These test methods cover the determination of properties of a pressure-sensitive adhesive. These test methods are applicable to those adhesives that form a bond of measurable strength rapidly upon contact with another surface.
