4.1 This test method is used in making a preliminary determination of the acceptability of fine aggregates with respect to the requirements of Specification C33/C33M that relate to organic impurities.4.2 The principal value of this test method is to furnish a warning that injurious amounts of organic impurities may be present. When a sample subjected to this test produces a color darker than the standard color it is advisable to perform the test for the effect of organic impurities on the strength of mortar in accordance with Test Method C87/C87M.

4.1 Bulk relative density (specific gravity) is the characteristic generally used for calculation of the volume occupied by the aggregate in various mixtures containing aggregate including Portland cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and other mixtures that are proportioned or analyzed on an absolute volume basis. Bulk relative density (specific gravity) is used in the computation of voids in aggregate in C1252 and C29/C29M. Bulk relative density (specific gravity) determined on the saturated surface dry (SSD) basis is used if the aggregate is wet, that is, if its absorption has been satisfied. Conversely, the bulk relative density (specific gravity) determined on the oven-dry basis is used for computations when the aggregate is dry or assumed to be dry.4.2 Apparent relative density (specific gravity) pertains to the relative density of the solid material making up the constituent particles not including the pore space within the particles that is accessible to water. This value is not widely used in construction aggregate technology.4.3 Water absorption values are used to calculate the change in the mass of an aggregate due to water absorbed in the pore spaces within the constituent particles, compared to the dry condition, when it is deemed that the aggregate has been in contact with water long enough to satisfy most of the absorption potential. The laboratory standard for absorption is that obtained after submerging dry aggregate for approximately 24 hours in water. Aggregates mined from below the water table may have a higher absorption when used, if not allowed to dry. Conversely, some aggregates when used may contain an amount of absorbed moisture less than the 24 hours soaked condition: For an aggregate that has been in contact with water and that had free moisture on the particle surface, the percentage of free moisture can be determined by deducting the absorption from the total moisture content determined according to C566 by drying.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the relative density (specific gravity) and absorption of fine aggregates.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 3.1 The amount and size distribution of noncarbonate (insoluble) material in carbonate aggregates is of interest to those conducting research on the polish susceptibility of stone used in pavements or on the friction properties of pavement surfaces. In addition, some agencies utilize the test for acceptance purposes to delineate carbonate aggregates that polish excessively and become slippery and those that will not.NOTE 1: The quality of the results produced by this standard are dependent upon the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and the maintenance of the equipment used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Specification D3666 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection, etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Specification D3666 alone does not completely ensure reliable results. 4.1 This test method provides a means of detecting the potential of an aggregate intended for use in concrete for undergoing alkali-silica reaction resulting in potentially deleterious internal expansion. It is based on the NBRI Accelerated Test Method (1-4).3 It is especially useful for aggregates that react slowly or produce expansion late in the reaction. However, it does not evaluate combinations of aggregates with cementitious materials nor are the test conditions representative of those encountered by concrete in service.4.2 Because the specimens are exposed to a NaOH solution, the alkali content of the cement is not a significant factor in affecting expansions.4.3 Results of tests conducted on an aggregate as described herein should form a part of the basis for a decision as to whether precautions should be taken against excessive expansion due to alkali-silica reaction. This specification covers crushed steel slag coarse and fine aggregates suitable for use in bituminous paving mixtures. The coarse and fine aggregates shall consist of hard, tough, durable pieces of steel slag, and shall be processed, as necessary, by crushing or screening, or both, and magnetic separation for the removal of metallics. At the time of delivery, the aggregates shall not contain injurious amounts of foreign materials such as clay, loam, wood, tramp metal, unhydrated lime, or other deleterious materials. 4.1 Sampling is equally as important as the testing, and the sampler shall use every precaution to obtain samples that will show the nature and condition of the materials which they represent.4.2 Samples for preliminary investigation tests are obtained by the party responsible for development of the potential source (Note 3). Samples of materials for control of the production at the source or control of the work at the site of use are obtained by the manufacturer, contractor, or other parties responsible for accomplishing the work. Samples for tests to be used in acceptance or rejection decisions by the purchaser are obtained by the purchaser or his authorized representative.NOTE 3: The preliminary investigation and sampling of potential aggregate sources and types occupies a very important place in determining the availability and suitability of the largest single constituent entering into the construction. 4.1 The testing and inspection of concrete and concrete aggregates are important elements in obtaining quality construction. A testing agency providing these services shall be selected with care.4.2 A testing agency shall be deemed qualified to perform and report the results of its tests if the agency meets the requirements of this practice. The testing agency services shall be provided under the technical direction of a registered professional engineer.4.3 This practice establishes essential characteristics pertaining to the organization, personnel, facilities, and quality systems of the testing agency. 4.1 The use of laboratory-obtained polishing curves and speed gradients on proposed aggregate combinations and pavement mixtures are helpful tools in predicting the polishing characteristics of these surfaces if placed in field service.1.1 This practice describes a laboratory procedure for estimating the extent to which aggregates or pavement surfaces are likely to polish when subjected to traffic. Specimens to be evaluated for polishing resistance are placed in a circular track and subjected to the wearing action of four small-diameter, pneumatic tires without use of abrasive or water.
