5.1 This test method provides information that can be used in material specifications for product design and quality assurance applications. It can be used in comparing different products.5.2 The use of this test method must be related to the purpose for which the test is performed. One purpose is for determining the relative strength of the tape in the size in which it is purchased or used. Another purpose is to identify or characterize a particular backing material.5.2.1 The test may be performed on the tape as-received, that is, without cutting the material to a specimen width less than the as-received width. Usually tapes wider than 48 mm [2 in.] are not tested due principally to the limitations of equipment. Tapes as narrow as approximately 3 mm [0.125 in.] can be tested.5.2.2 The test may be performed on a specimen cut from within the sample material boundaries using a sharp razor cutter, such as that defined in Section 6. This method is usually used for material characterization, determining quality of conformance, and for specification compliance.5.3 Stretch characteristics of elongation at break or force to a specified elongation can be related to the tape's intended use or for identifying or characterizing a material.1.1 This test method covers the measurement of tensile strength at break (breaking strength) and stretch properties (elongation) for pressure-sensitive tapes and labels. It includes procedures for machine direction and cross direction, for high-strength filament reinforced backings and for high stretch backings. It also includes a procedure for obtaining force (“F” value) in conjunction with a specified elongation. These procedures employ a constant-rate-of-extension (CRE)-type testing machine.1.2 The values stated in either SI or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; conversions between measurement systems must be conducted carefully.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 Preformed tape sealants are tacky, deformable solids that are used under compression between two substrates in a variety of sealing applications. This procedure measures the softness of a preformed tape sealant and gives an indication of the preformed tape sealant's ease of compression during installation. The resistance to penetration may also give an indication of the toughness of the preformed tape sealant.1.1 This test method describes a laboratory procedure for determining the softness of preformed tape sealants.NOTE 1: Cone penetration methods applicable to greases and to petrolatum are described in Test Methods D217 and D937. Test Method D2451 also uses a penetration technique for determining the degree of set in sash glazing compounds.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. Temperature values are also provided (in parentheses) in degrees Fahrenheit.1.3 The subcommittee with jurisdiction is not aware of any similar ISO standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

ASTM D315/D315M-95(2017) Standard Specification for Woven Asbestos Tape (Withdrawn 2022) Withdrawn, No replacement 发布日期 :  1970-01-01 实施日期 :

This specification covers woven asbestos tape having a specified minimum weight % of asbestos fiber, excluding the weight of other inorganic reinforcing strands that may be present. Asbestos tapes covered here are classified into classes (Classes A, B, C, D, and E) based on the nature of the yarns from which they are woven, grades (Commercial, Underwriter, A, AA, AAA, and AAAA) based on the percentage of asbestos content by mass, and types (Types II, IV, and VI) based on magnetic rating. Specimens shall be sampled, prepared, tested, and conform accordingly to specified chemical composition (yarn, asbestos, and wire, organic, and inorganic reinforcement content), electromagnetic (electrical insulation), mechanical (tensile or breaking strength), and dimensional (width, thickness, mass per unit length or weight, fabric count, and yarn number) property requirements.1.1 This specification covers woven asbestos tape having a minimum of 75 % asbestos fiber by weight, excluding the weight of other inorganic reinforcing strands that may be present.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.1.3 Warning—Breathing of asbestos dust is hazardous. Asbestos and asbestos products present demonstrated health risks for users and for those with whom they come into contact. In addition to other precautions, when working with asbestos-cement products, minimize the dust that results. For information on the safe use of chrysoltile asbestos, refer to “Safe Use of Chrysotile Asbestos: A Manual on Preventive and Control Measures.”21.4 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods, Section 13, described in this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard warning, see 1.3.1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 This guide is designed to assist an examiner in the selection of appropriate sample preparation methods for the analysis, comparison, and identification of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes. If no meaningful differences are noted between the known and unknown samples regarding physical appearance or measurements, then IR spectroscopy should be the next step in the analytical scheme.5.2 Infrared spectroscopy can provide molecular information regarding major organic and inorganic components. For various reasons, components in lesser amounts are typically more difficult to identify unequivocally. Reasons for this include interference of the absorption bands of the major components with the less intense bands of minor components and sensitivity issues whereby the minor components are present at concentrations below the detection limits of the instrument.5.3 Infrared spectroscopy can be used to obtain spectra for elucidation of the chemical composition of a tape and for comparison of two or more tape samples. When used for spectral comparisons, the objective is to determine whether any meaningful differences exist between the samples.1.1 Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is a valuable method for the identification and comparison of pressure sensitive tapes (1-20).2 This guide provides basic recommendations and information about infrared spectrometers and accessories, with an emphasis on sampling techniques specific to pressure sensitive tape examinations. The particular method(s) employed by each examiner or laboratory will depend upon available equipment, examiner training, sample suitability, and sample size.1.2 This guide is intended for examiners with a basic knowledge of the theory and proficiency in the use of infrared spectroscopy as well as experience in the handling and forensic examination of pressure sensitive tapes. Further, this guide is to be used in conjunction with a broader analytical scheme (21-23).1.3 Disclaimer: This guide offers a set of instructions for performing one or more specific operations. This standard cannot replace knowledge, skill, or the ability acquired through appropriate education, training, and experience and should be used in conjunction with sound professional judgment.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
