This specification lists code word names for bare overhead electrical conductors that are recognized in North America. Code word names are used to describe various conductor constructions used in North America, Europe and elsewhere in the world. The code word name construction can be modified with the use of suffix modifiers that identify additional construction variations. For example, the type of steel core material used in an ACSR (aluminum conductors, steel reinforced) type of conductor may be modified with the letter designation "/GA3" denoting the strength and type of coating for the steel core material. The code word names are grouped into tables of like constructions. The tables provide the applicable ASTM standard for which the conductor construction may be built to. They include code word names that are referenced in Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) standards.1.1 This specification lists code word names for bare overhead electrical conductors that are recognized in North America. A procedure has been outlined for adding additional code word names to this standard. Code word names have been in existence for many years describing various conductor constructions used in North America, Europe and elsewhere in the world. Their origin is not clearly understood. The historical basis of this standard originates from code word names developed years ago by member utility companies that participated in the US Aluminum Association, Technical Committee.1.2 The code word names are grouped into tables of like constructions. The code word name construction can be modified with the use of suffix modifiers that identify additional construction variations. For example the type of steel core material used in an ACSR type of conductor may be modified with the letter designation “/GA3” denoting the strength and type of coating for the steel core material.1.3 The tables provide the applicable ASTM standard for which the conductor construction may be built to. For conductors that are unique to use in Canada, the applicable CSA International standard is referenced.1.4 The tables include code word names that are referenced in Canadian CSA and European CENELEC standards. The information is believed to be correct however the user of this document is encouraged to consult the applicable CSA or CENELEC standard for confirmation.1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 To model the mechanical characteristics of overhead electrical conductor, stress-strain characteristics must be determined. The most accurate method for determination of these characteristics is a laboratory stress-strain test. These mechanical characteristics can then be used to determine the strain response of a conductor to mechanical loads, and thus predict the sag of the conductor. This can then be used to determine the required installation parameters to provide safe clearance and tension for the conductor usage.1.1 This test method covers the measurement of the elastic and short-term creep characteristics of conductors for overhead power lines.1.2 Stress-strain data from tests performed in accordance with IEC 61089 are compliant with this standard.1.3 Stress-strain data from prior Aluminum Association testing procedures are compliant with this standard.1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

This specification covers requirements and method of rating and testing for alloy chain slings. Only component parts compatible with alloy chain shall be used. Sling assembled by welding shall be fabricated by the electric or gas welding process, or both. The material shall undergo proof test to meet the prescribed mechanical requirements. Several grades of alloy chain sling shall conform to the specified working load limit values.1.1 This specification covers the requirements and method of rating and testing for alloy chain slings. Slings shall be assembled using components manufactured in accordance with Specification A391/A391M for Grade 80 chain, Specification A973/A973M for Grade 100 chain, and Specification A952/A952M for other components. This specification covers welded and mechanically assembled slings.1.2 This specification does not cover slings used at elevated temperatures (above 400 °F [200 °C]), in harmful or corrosive environmental conditions or for applications such as nonsymmetrical legs or loading.1.3 This specification is a performance and assembly specification. Other standards, such as OSHA 1910.184, ASME B30.9, and ASME B30.10, apply to the use of the products in this specification.1.4 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
