3.1 Tars change in volume with changes in temperature. They are loaded or transferred at widely varying temperatures. Volume correction factors are used to adjust bulk volumes measured at those temperatures with corresponding volumes at a base temperature of either 60°F or 15.6°C for the purposes of custody transfer and accounting operations.3.2 Correction factors as provided in this table have proven to be sufficiently accurate for the intended purposes.3.3 The coefficient of expansion for Specification D490 Type RT-12 at 60°F (15.6°C) per degree F is 0.00030.1.1 This table (Table 1) has been prepared by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to meet a demand from the tar industry for a short and convenient table for reducing volumes of road tar to the basis of 60°F (15.6°C) when extreme accuracy is not required. The table shows the volume occupied at 60°F (15.6°C) by a quantity of material occupying unit volume at the indicated temperature.1.2 Units—The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. 3.1 This practice is an accelerated evaluation of bead retention, retroreflectivity, daytime color, night time color, and wear characteristics of fluid traffic marking materials. It is used to determine the useful life of such markings in the field. The same procedures are applicable to evaluating longitudinal lines to determine service life.1.1 This practice covers the determination of the relative service life of fluid traffic marking materials such as paint, thermoplastic, epoxy, and polyester products under actual road conditions using transverse test lines. Materials under test are applied under prescribed conditions and periodic observations are made using prescribed performance criteria.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

The percentage of calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and alkali chloride (calculated as sodium chloride) in graded aggregate obtained from aggregate roads or aggregate bases under paved roads is of interest to highway departments using calcium chloride or sodium chloride stabilization. The percentages of calcium chloride or sodium chloride obtained in these test methods are compared with the quantities added to determine whether the road material and stabilizing agent were properly mixed, whether leaching of the stabilizing agent occurred, etc. Note 2—The quality of the result produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D 3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection/etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D 3740 does not in itself assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; D 3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors.1.1 These test methods are applicable to the determination of water-soluble calcium, magnesium, and sodium chlorides used as admixtures in the preparation of graded aggregate road materials. 1.1.1 Method A, Total Chlorides—Add an excess of a standard silver nitrate solution to the filtered sample; back titrate the excess silver with a standard ammonium thiocyanate solution to a red-orange endpoint using Volhard indicator. 1.1.2 Method B, Calcium Chloride—Calcium in an alkaline solution is titrated with standard EDTA solution using calcein modified as an indicator. The color change is from green to blue. 1.1.3 Method C, Magnesium Chloride—Calcium and magnesium, in a solution buffered to a pH of 10, are titrated with standard EDTA solution using eriochrome black T as an indicator. The color change is from red to blue. Magnesium chloride is calculated by subtracting the EDTA calcium equivalent volume determined in the analysis for calcium chloride from the total EDTA volume used, to obtain the magnesium EDTA equivalent by difference. 1.1.4 Method D, Alkali Chloride—Alkali chlorides are calculated from the difference of the total chloride and calcium and magnesium determinations. Note 1—These test methods assume that the aggregate did not contain significant amounts of the water-soluble chlorides in question before the admixture was added. If significant amounts of these chlorides are known or suspected to be present, the aggregate shall be tested for these constituents according to these test methods and the proper corrections made. 1.2 All observed and calculated values shall conform to the guidelines for significant digits and rounding established in Practice D 6026. 1.2.1 The method used to specify how data are collected, calculated, or recorded in this standard is not directly related to the accuracy to which the data can be applied in design or other uses, or both. How one applies the results obtained using this standard is beyond its scope. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This practice offers a set of instructions for performing one or more specific operations. This document cannot replace education or experience and should be used in conjunction with professional judgment. Not all aspects of this practice may be applicable in all circumstances. This ASTM standard is not intended to represent or replace the standard of care by which the adequacy of a given professional service must be judged, nor should this document be applied without consideration of a project’s many unique aspects. The word “Standard” in the title of this document means only that the document has been approved through the ASTM consensus process. 1.5 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard.
