This practice covers the definition and interpretation of the commonly used thermionic constants of electron emitters with appended standard methods of measurement. Cathode materials shall alternatively be evaluated by relating the temperature-limited emission to fundamental properties of the emitter, particularly the work function. Comparisons are made between emitters using the thermionic constants such as the work function, emission constant, and the temperature dependence of the work function. These thermionic constants are geometry and field effects-independent, but exhibit variations under different conditions. The pertinent equations the Richardson-Dushman equation of electron emission to evaluate the effective work function, which in turn, shall be used to find the Richardson work function and the true work function. This practice covers the rules for naming one, two, or three-piece round wire leads used as conductors through glass seals in electron tubes, excluding stranded leads and leads for semiconductors. Each portion of designation should be separated by a dash (-). Materials for a component lead are generally designated using the chemical symbols. 5.1 For most applications, this environment provides an accelerated method of ranking the relative degree of stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility for stainless steels and related alloys in aqueous chloride-containing environments. Materials that normally provide acceptable resistance in hot chloride service may crack in this test. The test may not be relevant to stress-corrosion cracking in polythionic acid or caustic environments.5.2 Resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in boiling magnesium chloride (155.0°C (311.0°F)) should, where possible, be correlated to resistance in service for the materials of interest. However, such correlations may not always be possible.5.3 Boiling magnesium chloride may also cause pitting of many stainless alloys. This leads to the possibility of confusing stress-corrosion failures with mechanical failures induced by corrosion-reduced net cross sections. This danger is particularly great when small cross section samples, high applied stress levels, long exposure periods, stress-corrosion resistant alloys, or a combination thereof are being used. Careful examination is recommended for correct diagnosis of the cause of failure.1.1 This practice describes a procedure for conducting stress-corrosion cracking tests in a boiling magnesium chloride solution. Although this test may be performed using various concentrations of magnesium chloride, this procedure covers a test solution held at a constant boiling temperature of 155.0 ± 1.0°C (311.0 ± 1.8°F). The boiling points of aqueous magnesium chloride solutions at one atmosphere pressure as a function of concentration are shown graphically in Fig. 1.2 A suggested test apparatus capable of maintaining solution concentration and temperature within the prescribed limits for extended periods of time is also described herein.3FIG. 1 Boiling Points of Aqueous Magnesium Chloride Solutions at One Atmosphere as a Function of Concentration21.2 The boiling magnesium chloride test is applicable to wrought, cast, and welded stainless steels and related alloys. 4.1 The hot salt test as applied to metals is utilized as a secondary design consideration indicator, as cracking has been shown to occur in laboratory tests simulating possible service conditions. Although limited evidence exists linking this phenomenon to actual service failures, cracking under stress in a hot salt environment should be recognized as a potential design controlling factor.4.2 The hot salt test is not to be misconstrued as being related to the stress corrosion cracking of materials in other environments. It is considered solely as a test in an environment that might be encountered in service.4.3 Because hot salt cracking under stress is considered a secondary design consideration and service failures have not been attributed solely to this phenomenon, manufacturing processes will be optimized or alloying changes will be made only after consideration is given to primary design factors such as creep resistance of a given high temperature alloy. The usefulness of the test lies rather in limiting maximum operating temperatures and stress levels or categorizing different alloys as to susceptibility, or both, if it is found that hot salt damage may accelerate failure by creep, fatigue, or rupture.4.4 Finally, the test does not lend itself to the utilization of pre-cracked specimens because cracking reinitiates at any salt-metal-air interface, resulting generally in many small cracks which extend independently. For this reason, specimens that are recommended for utilization in routine testing are of the smooth specimen category.1.1 This practice covers procedures for testing metals for embrittlement and cracking susceptibility when exposed under stress to a hot salt environment. This practice can be used for testing all metals for which service conditions dictate the need for such information. The test procedures described herein are generally applicable to all metal alloys; required adjustments in environmental variables (temperature, stress) to characterize a given materials system should be made. This practice describes the environmental conditions and degree of control required, and suggests means for obtaining this desired control.1.2 This practice can be used both for alloy screening for determination of relative susceptibility to embrittlement and cracking, and for the determination of time-temperature-stress threshold levels for onset of embrittlement and cracking. However, certain specimen types are more suitable for each of these two types of characterizations.NOTE 1: This practice relates solely to the performance of the exposure test. No detailed description concerning preparation and analysis of specimen types is offered. However, the optimum sample design may be one that uses the same type of stress encountered in service loading situations. 3.1 The ability of refractory shapes to withstand prescribed loads at elevated temperatures is a measure of the high-temperature service potential of the material. By definition, refractory shapes must resist change due to high temperature, and the ability to withstand deformation or shape change when subjected to significant loading at elevated temperatures is clearly demonstrated when refractory shapes are subjected to this test method. The test method is normally run at a sufficiently high temperature to allow some liquids to form within the test brick or to cause weakening of the bonding system. The result is usually a decrease in sample dimension parallel to the applied load and increase in sample dimensions perpendicular to the loading direction. Occasionally, shear fracture can occur. Since the test provides easily measurable changes in dimensions, prescribed limits can be established, and the test method has been long used to determine refractory quality. 3.1 An indication of the susceptibility to initiation of localized corrosion in this test method is given by the potential at which the anodic current increases rapidly. The more noble this potential, obtained at a fixed scan rate in this test, the less susceptible is the alloy to initiation of localized corrosion. The results of this test are not intended to correlate in a quantitative manner with the rate of propagation that one might observe in service when localized corrosion occurs.3.2 In general, once initiated, localized corrosion can propagate at some potential more electropositive than that at which the hysteresis loop is completed. In this test method, the potential at which the hysteresis loop is completed is determined at a fixed scan rate. In these cases, the more electropositive the potential at which the hysteresis loop is completed the less likely it is that localized corrosion will occur.3.3 If followed, this test method will provide cyclic potentiodynamic anodic polarization measurements that will reproduce data developed at other times in other laboratories using this test method for the two specified alloys discussed in 3.4. The procedure is used for iron-, nickel-, or cobalt-based alloys in a chloride environment.3.4 A standard potentiodynamic polarization plot is included. These reference data are based on the results from five different laboratories that followed the standard procedure, using specific alloys of Type 304 stainless steel, UNS S30400 and Alloy C-276, UNS N10276.3 Curves are included which have been constructed using statistical analysis to indicate the acceptable range of polarization curves.3.5 The availability of a standard test method, standard material, and standard plots should make it easy for an investigator to check his techniques to evaluate susceptibility to localized corrosion.1.1 This test method covers a procedure for conducting cyclic potentiodynamic polarization measurements to determine relative susceptibility to localized corrosion (pitting and crevice corrosion) for iron-, nickel-, or cobalt-based alloys in a chloride environment.
