5.1 These test methods may be used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments; however, caution is advised because information about between interlaboratory precision is incomplete. Comparative tests as directed in 5.1.1 may be advisable.5.1.1 If there are differences of practical significance between reported test results for two laboratories (or more), comparative tests should be performed to determine if there is statistical bias between them using competent statistical assistance. As a minimum, use test samples for such comparative tests that are as homogeneous as possible, drawn from the same lot of material as the samples that resulted in the disparate results during initial testing, and that are randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. The test results from the laboratories should be compared using statistical test for unpaired data at a probability level chosen prior to the testing series. If a bias is found either its cause must be found and corrected, or future test results for that material must be adjusted in consideration of the known bias.5.2 These test methods are useful to evaluate quality and cost control during the manufacture of pile yarn floor covering.5.3 The significance and uses of particular properties and test methods are discussed in the appropriate sections of the specified test methods.1.1 This guide covers the procedures listed as follows for testing woven, knitted and nonwoven backing fabrics designed for use in the manufacture of pile yarn floor coverings. The procedures appear in the following order:  SectionBow and Skewness of Woven Fabrics  8Breaking Force of Woven and Nonwoven Fabrics 15Breaking Force After Tufting of Woven and Nonwoven Fabrics 16Extractable Matter  9Fabric Count of Woven Fabrics 12Fabric Count of Knitted Fabrics 13Length of Woven Fabrics 11Mass per Unit Area (Weight) of Woven Fabrics 14Width of Woven Fabrics 101.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. 5.1 The depth of color achieved in dyeing fabric according to this practice is relative to the amount of sizing in the fabric. This practice employs a chromatic staining scale from 1 to 5 which is inversely proportional to the relative amount of sizing in the fabric. A light color stain indicates a low concentration of sizing and warrants a high numerical rating, while a dark color stain indicates a high concentration of sizing and warrants a low numerical rating.5.2 The accuracy of this practice depends upon the ability of the testing personnel to match the color of the stain to the colors in the AATCC 9 Step ChromaticTransference Scale.1.1 Using a color scale of 1 to 5, this practice describes the procedures for determining the presence and relative amount of sizing in fabrics made of undyed nylon or non-cationically dyeable polyester yarns prepared with a cationically dyeable sizing1.2 Procedures and apparatus other than those stated in this standard may be used by agreement of purchaser and supplier with the specific deviations from the standard acknowledged in the report.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 This test method provides for rapid screening of antimicrobial treatments located in or on fabrics and air filter media.5.2 This test method simulates actual use conditions that may occur on fabrics, for example, food and beverage spills; soiling from body contact, that is, body oils, skin cells; prolonged moisture exposure.5.3 This test method provides a means to screen for activity and durability of an antimicrobial treatment under conditions of organic loading.5.4 This test method provides for the simultaneous assessment of multiple fabric components, for example, fabric, component fibers with polymer incorporated treatments, and back coating if present, for antimicrobial activity.5.5 Fabrics or filter media may be cleaned prior to testing with this method in order to assess the durability of the antimicrobial effect.1.1 This test method is designed to evaluate qualitatively the presence of antibacterial and antifungal activity in or on fabrics or air filter media.1.2 Use half-strength (nutrient and agar) tryptic soy agar as the inoculum vehicle for bacteria and half-strength potato dextrose agar as the inoculum vehicle for mold conidia. Use of half-strength agars may reduce undue neutralization of an antimicrobial due to excessive organic load.1.3 This test method permits evaluation, both visually and stereomicroscopically, of the antimicrobial activity of fabric or filter media.1.4 Use this test method to assess the durability of the antimicrobial treatments on new fabric or filter media, and on those repeatedly laundered or exposed to in-use conditions.1.5 This test method may not be suited for covalently bonded (that is, silane-modified quaternary ammonium compounds) or actives with limited migration or solubility.1.6 Knowledge of microbiological techniques is required for the practice of this test method.1.7 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

5.1 Test Method D4032 for testing stiffness of fabrics is considered satisfactory for quality control testing. It may also be used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments since the test method has been used extensively in the trade field. In cases of differences in values reported by purchaser and seller using Test Method D4032 for acceptance testing, the statistical bias, if any, between the laboratories of the purchaser and the seller should be determined with each comparison being based on the testing of specimens taken homogeneously from a lot of material of the type being evaluated. Specimens should be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each of the laboratories.5.2 The circular bend procedure gives a force value related to fabric stiffness, simultaneously averaging stiffness in all directions. The stiffness tests in Test Methods D1388 are of the single directional type.5.3 The circular bend procedure is simple to perform and may be used for knitted, woven, or nonwoven fabrics, provided gage capacity is in keeping with fabric range tested.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the stiffness of fabrics by the circular bend procedure.1.2 This test method is generally applicable to all types of fabrics, including woven, knitted and nonwovens, of any fiber content.NOTE 1: For other methods of testing for stiffness, refer to Test Methods D1388.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be considered as standard; the values in inch-pound units are included for information only.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
