5.1 Manufacturers of thermal insulation for valves typically express the performance of their products in charts and tables showing heat loss per valve. These data are presented for both bare and insulated valves of different pipe sizes, ANSI classes, insulation types, insulation thicknesses, and service temperatures. Additional information on effects of wind velocity, jacket emittance, bare valve emittance, and ambient conditions are also required to properly select an insulation system. Due to the infinite combination of pipe sizes, ANSI classes, insulation types and thicknesses, service temperatures, insulation cover geometries, surface emittance values, and ambient conditions, it is not possible to publish data for each possible case.5.2 Users of thermal insulation for piping systems faced with the problem of designing large systems of insulated piping, encounter substantial engineering costs to obtain the required thermal information. This cost can be substantially reduced by both the use of accurate engineering data tables, or by the use of available computer analysis tools, or both.5.3 The use of this practice by the manufacturer, contractor, and users of thermal insulation for valves and flanges will provide standardized engineering data of sufficient accuracy and consistency for predicting the savings in heating energy use by insulating bare valves and flanges.5.4 Computers are now readily available to most producers and consumers of thermal insulation to permit use of this practice.5.5 The computer program in Practice C680 has been developed to calculate the heat loss per unit length, or per unit surface area, of both bare and insulated pipe. With values for bare valve or flange surface areas, heat loss can be estimated. By estimating the outer insulation surface area from an insulation manufacturer's or contractor's drawings, the heat loss from the insulation surface can likewise be calculated by taking the product of heat loss per unit area (from programs conforming to Practice C680) and the valve or flange insulation surface area. The area of the uninsulated surfaces also will need to be considered.5.6 The use of this practice requires that the valve or flange insulation system meets either Specification C1695 for removeable/reuseable or the Adjunct to Practice C4503 for insulation fabricated from rigid board and pipe insulation.1.1 The mathematical methods included in this practice provide a calculational procedure for estimating heat loss or heat savings when thermal insulation is added to bare valves and flanges.1.2 Questions of applicability to real systems should be resolved by qualified personnel familiar with insulation systems design and analysis.1.3 Estimated accuracy is limited by the following:1.3.1 The range and quality of the physical property data for the insulation materials and system,1.3.2 The accuracy of the methodology used in calculation of the bare valve and insulation surface areas, and the quality of workmanship, fabrication, and installation.1.4 This procedure is considered applicable both for conventional-type insulation systems and for removable/reuseable covers. In both cases, for purposes of heat transfer calculations, the insulation system is assumed to be homogenous.1.5 This practice does not intend to establish the criteria required in the design of the equipment over which thermal insulation is used, nor does this practice establish or recommend the applicability of thermal insulation over all surfaces.1.6 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

4.1 The purpose of this test method is to define a procedure for testing components being considered for installation into a high-purity gas distribution system. Application of this test method is expected to yield comparable data among components tested for the purposes of qualification for this installation.1.1 This test method covers the testing of automatic valves for cycle life utilizing static, no-flow conditions. This no-flow condition is felt to be a realistic test to determine the valve's cycle life.1.2 This test method applies to automatically operated valves. It is intended to measure the cycle life of the valve itself including the seat and body sealing. It does not include cycle testing of the actuator. Testing must include both pressure testing and helium leak testing and must include vacuum test conditions when appropriate. This test method may be applied to a broad range of valve sizes.1.3 Limitations: 1.3.1 This test is not designed to evaluate the performance of the actuator. This test method addresses the gas system contamination aspects of the valve performance, that is, seat and body leakage and diaphragm or bellows failure. If the actuator fails during the evaluation, the valve is deemed as a failure.1.3.2 While the requirements of a valve's performance might include items such as particulate generation levels, this test method only attempts to evaluate cycle life and performance degradation as they relate to the ability of the valve to operate and shut off flow.1.3.3 This test method is written with the assumption that the operator understands the use of the apparatus at a level equivalent to six months of experience.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The inch-pound units given in parentheses are for information only.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific hazard statements are given in Section 7.1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Hydrostatic internal pressure tests shall be performed on valves, check valves, and blind flanges to verify compliance with hydrostatic pressure resistance, leakage resistance, joint tightness, and activation pressure requirements.1.1 This specification covers fittings, appurtenances and valves which are to be used with pipe and tubing complying with Specifications D1785, D2241, D2846/D2846M, F441/F441M or F442/F442M, or other piping as specified by the fittings manufacturer. These products, such as unions, flanges or valves, are not included in the scope of existing ASTM specifications. This specification includes minimum requirements for testing, materials, dimensions, workmanship, marking, and in-plant quality control.1.2 Fittings or appurtenances covered by this specification are generally either molded, fabricated, or assembled from molded or machined components. The materials used in components include rigid thermoplastics, thermoplastic elastomers, elastomerics, and metals. The body or main portion of the fitting, appurtenance or valve is typically PVC, CPVC, PE or PA (nylon). All products covered by this standard are intended to be used in PVC or CPVC plastic piping systems, or as a transition from these to metal systems.1.3 The application of these products to gas service is beyond the scope of this specification.1.4 The products covered by this specification are intended for use with the distribution of pressurized liquids only, which are chemically compatible with the piping materials. Due to inherent hazards associated with testing components and systems with compressed air or other compressed gases some manufacturers do not allow pneumatic testing of their products. Consult with specific product/component manufacturers for their specific testing procedures prior to pneumatic testing.NOTE 1: Warning: Pressurized (compressed) air or other compressed gases contain large amounts of stored energy which present serious safety which present serious safety hazards should a system fail for any reason.1.5 Fittings which rely on heat fusion welding for connection to the piping system are outside the scope of this specification.1.6 Check valves (including foot valves) covered by this specification shall not be considered backflow prevention devices and shall not be used for the protection of a potable water supply. For definitions and requirements of backflow prevention devices, consult model plumbing codes and ASSE.21.7 Due to the complex and installation-specific concerns surrounding chemical resistance and corrosion, this specification does not address the compatibility of the products with all possible end-use environments. Additional testing specific to the end-use environment is recommended if the system is conveying liquids other than potable water.1.8 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.1.9 The following safety caveat applies only to the test methods and in-plant quality control portions, section of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.10 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

4.1 The purpose of this test method is to define a procedure for testing components intended for installation into a high-purity gas distribution system. Application of this test method is expected to yield comparable data among components tested for the purposes of qualification for this installation.4.2 Background Testing—This test method uses background testing to ensure that the system is not contributing particles above a low, acceptable level. This ensures that counts seen are from the test device, not from a contaminated system. The techniques used to obtain background counts do not produce conditions identical to the conditions existing when a test device is in place. It is recommended that the control products be run periodically to see that they give consistent results. These control products should be the lowest particle release products. They will be additional proof that the system is not contributing excess particles during the static, dynamic, or impact portions of the test.4.3 This test method can be used for testing lengths of tubing. The flow criteria will be identical to that indicated for valves. A tubing test would only include the static background, the impact background, and the static and impact portions of the method. A dynamic portion could be added by actuating the upstream pneumatic valve (PV1), thus creating a flow surge to the test length of tubing.1.1 This test method covers gas distribution system components intended for installation into a high-purity gas distribution system.1.1.1 This test method describes a procedure designed to draw statistically significant comparisons of particulate generation performance of valves tested under aggressive conditions.1.1.2 This test method is not intended as a methodology for monitoring on-going particle performance once a particular valve has been tested.1.2 This test method utilizes a condensation nucleus counter (CNC) applied to in-line gas valves typically used in semiconductor applications. It applies to automatic and manual valves of various types (such as diaphragms or bellows), 6.3 through 12.7-mm (1/4 through 1/2-in.) size. For applications of this test method to larger valves, see the table in the appendix.1.2.1 Valves larger than 12.7 mm (1/2 in.) can be tested by this methodology. The test stand must be sized accordingly. Components larger than 12.7 mm (1/2 in.) should be tested while maintaining a Reynolds number of 20 000 to 21 000. This is the Reynolds number for 12.7-mm (1/2-in.) components tested at a velocity of 30.5 m/s (100 ft/s).1.3 Limitations: 1.3.1 This test method is applicable to total particle count greater than the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the condensation nucleus particle counter and does not consider classifying data into various size ranges.1.3.1.1 It is questionable whether significant data can be generated from nondynamic components (such as fittings and short lengths of tubing) to compare, with statistical significance, to the data generated from the spool piece. For this reason, this test method cannot reliably support comparisons between these types of components.1.3.1.2 If detection or classification of particles, or both, in the size range of laser particle counter (LPC) technology is of interest, an LPC can be utilized for testing components. Flow rates, test times, sampling apparatus, and data analysis outlined in this test method do not apply for use with an LPC. Because of these variations, data from CNCs are not comparable to data from LPCs.1.3.2 This test method specifies flow and mechanical stress conditions in excess of those considered typical. These conditions should not exceed those recommended by the manufacturer. Actual performance under normal operating conditions may vary.1.3.3 The test method is limited to nitrogen or clean dry air. Performance with other gases may vary.1.3.4 This test method is intended for use by operators who understand the use of the apparatus at a level equivalent to six months of experience.1.3.5 The appropriate particle counter manufacturer's operating and maintenance manuals should be consulted when using this test method.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Specific hazard statements are given in Section 6, Hazards.1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Included are flanges, fittings, valves, and similar parts made to specified dimensions or to dimensional standards, such as in ASME Specification B16.5.1.2 Several grades of alloy steels are included in this specification.1.3 Supplementary requirements are provided for use when additional testing or inspection is desired. These shall apply only when specified individually by the purchaser in the order.1.4 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units. Unless the order specifies the applicable “M” specification designation (SI units), however, the material shall be furnished to inch-pound units.1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as the standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.1.6 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to test methods portions, 8.1, 8.2, and 9.5 – 9.7 of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
