6.1 One of the key properties for printing in the lab or on production equipment is the intensity of the color, color balance and uniformity. This test can be used to ensure that the proper amount of ink is transferred to the substrate by obtaining a target density value, in addition to determining whether the print is uniform by measuring the reflection density over a wide print area. This then allows the use of the print for controlled testing of other appearance properties, such as gloss and color, and performance properties, such as resistance to abrasion and chemicals.6.2 This test can be used to help achieve consistent color reproduction of printed color on flat surfaces.6.3 Transfer of density readings from one set of inks to another, or from one substrate to another, carries a high risk of producing a color or tone shift. It is not in the scope of this test method to use density readings as digital proof of target points for printing process control.1.1 This test method describes a procedure for measuring reflection density of printed matter using a reflection densitometer or spectrodensitometer.1.2 This test method is intended primarily for process colors (yellow, magenta and cyan) and black. With appropriate instrumentation, it may also be used for other colors.1.3 This test method applies to prints made by any printing process on a flat surface, with reflection density values ranging from just above zero, on the unprinted substrate, through to around 2.5 for very dense prints.1.4 This test method can be used for prints on paper, film or board but not for those on metal or foil. 4.1 Dichloromethane-soluble materials are typically referred to as extractives. These extractives are comprised of organic materials that originated in the wood or cotton. The measure is an indication of the efficiency of removal of these substances during pulping and bleaching. 3.1 Rosin, particularly gum and wood rosin, occasionally contains small amounts of contamination such as sand, dirt or bark. Rosin derivatives occasionally contain traces of insoluble material as a result of the raw materials used in their production or they may be generated during the production process. In all instances the presence of such insoluble material should be minimal. This test method describes a rapid and reliable procedure for determining the amount of such insoluble matter. It is based on the knowledge that rosin and most of its derivatives are soluble in numerous organic solvents whereas most common contaminants are not. 5.1 This test method has the advantage of extreme simplicity. It is a crude and non-specific test method, but it is useful in the study of long-term trends. 3.1 Nonvolatile matter in solvents can adversely affect their cleaning properties. These test methods can be used to control soil contamination in the boiling solvent, which if allowed to become too high, can decrease the stability of the solvent.3.2 These test methods can be used to establish manufacturing and purchasing specifications.1.1 These test methods cover the determination of nonvolatile matter in halogenated organic solvents and admixtures.1.2 Five test methods are covered, as follows:1.2.1 Test Method A—For halogenated organic solvents or admixtures having less than 50 ppm nonvolatile matter; or where precision better than ±10 ppm is required.1.2.2 Test Method B—For halogenated organic solvents or admixtures having more than 50 ppm nonvolatile matter or where precision of ±0.001 % (10 ppm) is satisfactory.1.2.3 Test Method C—For low-boiling halogenated organic solvents or their admixtures (for example, methylene chloride, trichlorotrifluoroethane) that may superheat and cause bumping while evaporating to dryness with steam. 4.1 This test method is intended to provide a measure of the volume of dry coating obtainable from a given volume of liquid coating. This value is useful for comparing the coverage (square feet of surface covered at a specified dry film thickness per unit volume) obtainable with different coating products.4.2 For various reasons the value obtained may not be equal to that predicted from simple additivity of the weights and volumes of the raw materials in a formulation. One reason is that the volume occupied by a solution of resin in solvent may be the same, greater, or less than the total volume of the separate ingredients: such contraction or expansion in resin solutions is governed by a number of factors, one of which is the extent and direction of spread between solubility parameters of the resin and solvent.4.3 The spatial configuration of the pigment particles and the degree to which the spaces between the pigment particles are filled with the binder also affect the volume of a dry coating formulation. Above the critical pigment volume concentration, the apparent volume of the dry film is significantly greater than theoretical due to the increase in unfilled voids between pigment particles. The use of volume nonvolatile matter values in such instances should be carefully considered as the increased volume is largely due to air trapped in these voids.1.1 This test method is believed to be applicable to the determination of the volume of nonvolatile matter of a variety of coatings. An interlaboratory study to establish the precision of this test method included a water-reducible exterior latex paint and three automotive coatings that included a solvent-reducible primer surfacer, water reducible primer surfacer, water reducible enamel topcoat, and acrylic dispersion lacquer topcoat. Earlier collaborative studies included a gloss enamel, a flat wall paint, a gloss house enamel, an industrial baking enamel, an interior latex paint, and an exterior latex paint. 4.1 The result obtained by this test is normally considered to be the moisture content of the leather sample. This result is used to correct all other chemical tests to a moisture-free basis.4.2 Materials that are volatile under these conditions, other than water, may be present in the leather, although their amount in any normal leather would be expected to be a very small percentage of the total volatile matter.4.3 Under the conditions of this test, certain materials in leather, such as protein fiber and chromium tanning salts, may retain moisture. Other materials, such as tannins and oils, may be oxidized. Both of these effects produce negative errors in the moisture determination.4.4 The amount of volatile matter (moisture) released by a given leather varies with (a) degree of grinding of the sample, (b) weight of sample taken, (c) temperature and time of the oven drying, (d) shape of the weighing container, and (e) type of oven (gravity versus mechanical convection) used.4.5 Because of the above unknown errors, the result of this test is a purely arbitrary value for the moisture content of the sample. It is, therefore, essential that the method be followed exactly in order to obtain reproducible results among laboratories.
