4.1 Gasket compressions produced by bolt loads in a flanged joint are important in the application engineering of a joint assembly. They are related to the ability of a gasket to seal, to maintain tightness on assembly bolts, and to a variety of other gasket properties that determine the service behavior of a joint assembly. Thus, being able to determine the degree of compression in a gasket under the bolt loading will permit one to make qualitative predictions of the behavior of a joint assembly when it comes in contact with the application or service environment. With the plug test, bending of a flange facing between bolt centers can be measured; however, in a few highly distortable flanges the maximum bending between bolt centers may not be detected.4.2 The variation in gasket compressions at selected points in a flat-face joint assembly reveals the degree of flange distortion or the ability of the flange to distribute satisfactorily the compressive forces from bolt loads throughout the gasket.1.1 This practice permits measurement of gasket compression resulting from bolt loading on a flat-face joint assembly at ambient conditions.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. This specification covers zinc-coated flat steel tape in coils for use as interlocking armor and flat armor for electric cables. The zinc-coated tape is produced with three classes of zinc coating weight. The zinc-coated tape shall be furnished in coils of one continuous length, with not more than an average of one weld/50 lb [23 kg]. The tensile strength shall be determined on longitudinal specimens consisting of the full width of the tape when practical, or a straight specimen cut or sheared from the center of the tape. The elongation shall be determined as the permanent increase in length, after failure of a marked section of the tape specimen originally 10 in. in length. The tape shall be capable of being bent flat on itself, either lengthwise or crosswise, without indication of failure. During the visual inspection, 1 sample coil shall random be selected from every 10 coils in the first 100 coils of the lot and 1 sample coil shall random be selected for every additional 35 coils, but not less than 3 coils from the entire lot. The weight of coating shall be determined by the hydrochloric acid-antimony chloride method. The zinc coating shall remain adherent without flaking or spalling when the tape is subjected to a 180° bend over a mandrel of required diameter.1.1 This specification covers requirements for zinc-coated flat steel tape in coils for use as interlocking armor and flat armor for electrical cables. The zinc-coated tape is produced with three classes of zinc coating weight.1.2 Units—The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

This specification covers carbon steel flat wire in coils or cut lengths. The steel materials shall be produced from rimmed, capped, semi-killed, hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel. The steel specimens shall undergo cast or heat analysis and product analysis and shall conform to the required chemical compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and copper. The desired edge shall be classified as follows: prepared edge of a specified contour produced when a very accurate width is required or when the finish of the edge suitable for electroplating is required, or both (Number 1 Edge); not applicable to flat wire products ( Number 2 Edge); approximately square edge produced by slitting (Number 3 Edge); rounded edge produced either by edge rolling or resulting from flat rolling of a round section (Number 4 Edge); square edge produced from slit-edge material on which the burr is eliminated by rolling or filling (Number 5 Edge); and square edge produced by edge rolling when the width tolerance and edge condition are not as exacting as for No. 1 Edge (Number 6 Edge). The dimensional tolerances shall conform to the required values of thickness, width and length. The steel materials shall conform to the required values of temper, Rockwell hardness and tensile strength.1.1 This specification covers carbon steel flat wire in coils or cut lengths. Flat wire is classified as a cold-rolled section, rectangular in shape, 0.500 in. [12.7 mm] or less in width and under 0.250 in. [6.35 mm] in thickness.1.2 Low-carbon steel flat wire is produced from steel compositions with a maximum carbon content of 0.25 % by cast or heat analysis.1.3 Carbon spring steel flat wire is produced to a carbon range in which the specified or required maximum is over 0.25 % by cast or heat analysis.1.3.1 Two types of carbon spring steel flat wire are produced:1.3.1.1 Untempered cold-rolled carbon spring steel flat wire, produced to several desirable combinations of properties and1.3.1.2 Hardened and tempered carbon spring steel wire.1.4 Definite application flat wire is a product developed for a specific application and may be specified only by size and descriptive name.1.5 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
