The purpose of this standard is to specify performance criteria and type-test methods used to evaluate portable radiation detection instruments. These instruments are used for detection of photon emitting radioactive materials and photon exposure rates. Instruments are used for the purposes of detection, interdiction and prevention. Instruments may include alarms to indicate an increase in exposure rate. This standard does not apply to instruments that are primarily intended to provide a… read more measurement of dose equivalent rate. In a departure from other DHS-related ANSI N42 instruments standards, some issues of Radiological/Nuclear initial response (R/N initial response) are discussed. A tactical description of R/N initial response is provided in this revised standard in Annex H and is generally linked to related R/N initial response instrumentation situations in ANSI N42.32, ANSI N42.34, ANSI N42.35, ANSI N42.38, ANSI N42.43, ANSI N42.53, and directly linked to ANSI N42.49A. This direct link is from a portable instrument with low exposure rate range to a portable instrument of a much higher exposure rate range. This instrument range change may be necessary in some R/N initial response situations. read less

This standard establishes specific calibration and calibration-related requirements for portable radiation protection instruments used for detection and measurement of levels of ionizing radiation fields or levels of radioactive surface contamination. For purposes of this standard, portable radiation protection instruments are those battery-powered instruments that are carried to a specific facility or location for use. Count rate meters and scalers, when used with an appropriate detection… read more probe for quantifying activity, can be considered portable radiation protection instruments and should be treated as a single unit for the purposes of this standard. read less

IEEE Std 1003.1-201x defines a standard operating system interface and environment, including a command interpreter (or "shell"), and common utility programs to support applications portability at the source code level. It is intended to be used by both applications developers and system implementors.IEEE Std 1003.1-201x comprises four major components (each in anassociated volume): 1. General terms, concepts, and interfaces common to all volumes of IEEE Std 1003.1-201x, including utility… read more conventions and C-language header definitions, are included in the Base Definitions volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-201x. 2. Definitions for system service functions and subroutines, language-specific system services for the C programming language, function issues, including portability, error handling, and error recovery, are included in the System Interfaces volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-201x. 3. Definitions for a standard source code-level interface to command interpretation services (a "shell") and common utility programs for application programs are included in the Shell and Utilities volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-201x. 4. Extended rationale that did not fit well into the rest of the document structure, containing historical information concerning the contents of IEEE Std 1003.1-201x and why features were included or discarded by the standard developers, is included in the Rationale (Informative) volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-201x.The following areas are outside of the scope of IEEE Std 1003.1-200x: * Graphics interfaces * Database management system interfaces * Record I/O considerations * Object or binary code portability * System configuration and resource availabilityIEEE Std 1003.1-200x describes the external characteristics andfacilities that are of importance to applications developers, ratherthan the internal construction techniques employed to achieve thesecapabilities. Special emphasis is placed on those functions andfacilities that are needed in a wide variety of commercial applications. read less

This standard establishes minimum acceptance performance requirements for portable radiation protection instruments used for detection and measurement of ionizing radiation fields or levels of radioactive surface contamination that are near background. For purposes of this standard, portable radiation protection instruments are those battery-powered instruments that are carried to a specific facility or location for use. Specifically, this standard is intended to apply to those instruments… read more utilized to make in-situ measurements for confirmation of residual radioactivity levels that are below criteria established to permit the unrestricted release of a surface area or component from further regulatory controls. This standard is intended to define performance requirements and acceptance testing that supplements those established in ANSI N42.17A-1989 [B7] and ANSI N42.17C-1989 [B8], and to define calibration requirements that supplement those established in ANSI N323A-1998 [B6].1 This standard is applicable to the measurement of gamma, beta, and alpha radiation emissions only. This standard addresses the instrument response requirements for the same range of surface activity covered by the above ANSI standards, but extends the applicable range of dose-rate response below those standards. This is illustrated in Table 1. Throughout this standard, three verbs have been used to indicate the degree of rigor intended for each specific test or performance criterion. The word "shall" is used to denote a requirement; the word "should" to denote a recommendation; and the word "may" to denote a permissible practice. read less

This standard establishes minimum acceptable performance criteria for health physics instrumentation for use in ionizing radiation fields under extreme environmental conditions. Included are testing methods to establish the acceptability of each type of instrumentation. This standard does not specify which instruments or systems are required, nor does it consider the number of specific applications of such instruments. This standard supplements the basic performance requirements for health physics instrumentation as specified in ANSI N42.17A [2]. Specifications in this standard are expected to be called for by the user as required and should not be considered as general specifications.
