This guide describes quality assurance protocols for the determination of the anions and cations in atmospheric wet deposition which include the minimum recommended requirements for the preparation of calibration standards and suggested procedures for validating laboratory measurement results. Specimens to be used in all tests shall consist of reagent grade chemicals, water, and standard solutions. Common techniques for chemical analysis include automated colorimetry; ion chromatography, flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, electrometry, and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. Analytical precision and bias determinations shall be done for evaluation of the reference materials. Samples for reanalysis may be selected from the evaluation of control charts and the calculation of ion and conductivity percent differences.1.1 This guide describes quality assurance (QA) protocols for the determination of the anions and cations in Atmospheric Wet Deposition (AWD) shown in Table 1.1.2 Included in this guide are minimum recommended requirements for the preparation of calibration standards and suggested procedures for validating laboratory measurement results.1.3 This guide describes minimum requirements for the frequency of analysis of quality assurance samples and recommends procedures for the evaluation of quality assurance data.1.4 The guide's recommendations are based upon expected anion and cation concentrations in AWD (1)2 and Appendix X1.1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 3.1 This test method is capable of generating quantitative values of atmospheric chloride deposition specifying milligrams of chloride ions per square metre per day (or other units derived from such values).NOTE 1: Chlorides in the atmosphere exist as a suspension of liquid droplets or solid particles. They are transported to solid surfaces by gravity, wind, or brownian motions. These transport mechanisms are direction-sensitive so that a vertical cylinder will not necessarily receive the same flux as a horizontal plate, or objects with different sizes and orientations. Therefore, the use of this approach to provide an indication of the deposition of chlorides on objects in atmospheric exposures may not be quantitatively accurate; however, this technique has been successful in classifying the severity of exposure in a variety of marine locations.3.2 The sites where samples are to be taken and the sampling time periods should be established. A continuous program of monthly or 30-day exposures is recommended for site characterization. Seasonal monitoring may be performed if there are specific periods of interest.1.1 This test method covers a wet candle device and its use in measuring atmospheric chloride deposition (amount of chloride salts deposited from the atmosphere on a given area per unit time).1.2 Data on atmospheric chloride deposition can be useful in classifying the corrosivity of a specific area, such as an atmospheric test site. The precision and accuracy of the methods are usually, at least, as good as the sampling of Wet Blue itself.5.2 The chromium content of Wet Blue is related to the degree of tannage obtained, and hence may be a matter for specification in the purchase of Wet Blue. 5.1 After application to either interior or exterior surfaces, latex paints may be subjected to conditions of high humidity, condensation, or precipitation. This may sometimes lead to a loss of adhesion to the substrate over which they have been applied. 5.1 Precision equipment and high pressure hydraulic machinery require filtered lubricants and fluids to prevent damage from the circulation of hard particulate contaminants. Three types of particulate contaminants are present in lubricants and hydraulic fluids: built in contaminants from the machinery assembly process, generated contaminants from equipment wear, and contaminants that enter from external sources. Water can also enter machinery lubrication and hydraulic systems through fill ports, defective seals, corroded heat exchangers, and reservoir breathers in the form of rain water, cleaning solutions, process water, metalworking fluids, coolants, and humid air.5.2 The ability of lubricants and hydraulic fluids to retain their filterability in the presence of moisture is critical for efficient and reliable machine performance. Normally, the pressure differential across a filter will increase gradually as it accumulates dirt, sludge, and wear debris. In order to prevent the filter from collapsing, bypass valves in the filter assembly open when the differential pressure gets too high. If a filter becomes blocked by additives that precipitate due to the presence of contaminating water, the bypass valve will open. This can lead to a machine shutdown or circulation of damaging particles throughout the machine.1.1 This test method covers determination of the wet filterability of lubricants and hydraulic fluids based upon mass flow rate measurements through a 0.8 µm membrane after ageing of the fluid in the presence of water. The procedure applies to lubricants and hydraulic fluids that are formulated with American Petroleum Institute (API) Group I, II, III, IV and certain V base stocks. 4.1 Determination of the hydro-thermal area stability of Wet Blue provides information concerning the efficacy of the tanning process as well as the adequacy of the Wet Blue for intended end use applications where area stability is a particular requirement. Relative area stability of chrome-tanned leather is a requirement for many applications such as bookbinding, shoe and boot components, upholstery, seals and gaskets, etc.4.2 This test method is suitable for use in development work and process control in the tannery and for specification testing of Wet Blue for domestic and international commercial purposes.1.1 This test method provides a standard procedure for determination of the dimensional stability or area shrinkage of a specimen of Wet Blue that is submersed in boiling water for a specified time period. 5.1 Molding and extruding plastic pellets require dust free, dry pellets to prevent processing problems. Plastic producers try to remove the dust and streamers with dust removal systems prior to packaging and loading. How to accurately measure dust and streamer content in plastic pellets is an important quality control issue.5.2 Particle size analysis is used to determine a percentage of particle size distribution from a representative sample of the whole. In terms of size analysis concerning plastic pellets, sieving is used to determine the dust content in the range of 500 to 2000 micron. Test Method D1921, Test Method B, is used to determine this type of particle sizing.5.3 After dry sieve analysis, particles smaller than 500 microns need to be analyzed by wet method. A fresh sample shall be used for wet analysis. This test method allows washing down the fines attached to the pellets by electrostatic forces.5.4 The wet analysis provides accurate quantification of small to large amounts of fines, negating static effects, and eliminating detrimental effects of mechanical agitation. A wet analysis must be employed to accurately quantify lower PPM dust levels in plastic pellets.1.1 This test method measures the amount of fine particles adhered on plastic pellets or granules in which they are commonly produced and supplied. The lower limit of this test method is restricted only by the porosity of the filter disc used to capture the particle size being quantified.1.2 The wet analysis technique allows for separation and collection of statically charged particles by liquid wash and filtration methods.
