5.1 Oxygen gas transmission rate is an important determinant of the protection afforded by barrier materials. It is not, however, the sole determinant, and additional tests, based on experience, must be used to correlate package performance with O2GTR. This test method is suitable as a referee method of testing, provided that the user and source have agreed on sampling procedures, standardization procedures, test conditions, and acceptance criteria.1.1 This test method covers a procedure for the determination of the steady-state rate of transmission of oxygen gas into packages. 5.1 This test method will allow comparisons of the burning characteristics of various metallic materials. The burning characteristics that can be evaluated include (1) burn and no-burn pressure, (2) burn and no-burn temperature, (3) regression rate of the melting interface, and (4) visual evaluation of the burning process of the test sample.1.1 This test method covers test apparatus and techniques to determine the minimum test gas pressure and sample temperature that supports self-sustained burning and the regression rate of the melting surface of a standardized sample of a metallic material that has been ignited using a promoter.1.2 The data obtained from this test method are dependent on the precise test sample configuration and provide a basis for comparing the burning characteristics of metallic materials. No criteria are implied for relating these data for the suitability of a material's use in any actual system.1.3 Requirements for apparatus suitable for this test method are given, as well as an example. 5.1 DO may be either a corrosive or passivating agent in boiler/steam cycles and is therefore controlled to specific concentrations that are low relative to environmental and wastewater treatment samples. Out-of-specification DO concentrations may cause corrosion in boiler systems, which leads to corrosion fatigue and corrosion products — all detrimental to the life and efficient operation of a steam generator. The efficiency of DO removal from boiler feedwater by mechanical or chemical means, or both, may be monitored by continuously measuring the DO concentration before and after the removal process with on-line instrumentation. DO measurement is also a check for air leakage into the boiler water cycle.5.2 Feedwater chemistry guidelines for high-pressure boilers generally require specific feedwater DO concentrations: 5 μg/L or less for reducing all volatile treatment [AVT(R)]; 5–10 μg/L for oxidizing all volatile treatment [AVT(O)]; 50–200 μg/L for oxygenated treatment [OT] (3).5.3 In microelectronics production, DO can be detrimental in some manufacturing processes, for example, causing undesirable oxidation on silicon wafers.1.1 This test method covers the on-line determination of dissolved oxygen (DO) in water samples primarily in ranges from 0 to 500 μg/L (ppb), although higher ranges may be used for calibration. On-line instrumentation is used for continuous measurements of DO in samples that are brought through sample lines and conditioned from high-temperature and high-pressure sources when necessary.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The chlorine content of coals may be useful in the evaluation of slagging problems, corrosion in engineering processes, and in the total analysis of coal and coke. 5.1 The purpose of this guide is to furnish qualified technical personnel with pertinent information for the selection of cleaning methods for cleaning materials and equipment to be used in oxygen-enriched environments. This guide furnishes qualified technical personnel with guidance in the specification of oxygen system cleanliness needs. It does not actually specify cleanliness levels.5.2 Insufficient cleanliness of components used in oxygen systems can result in the ignition of contaminants or components by a variety of mechanisms such as particle, mechanical, or pneumatic impact. These mechanisms are explained in detail in Guide G88.5.3 Adequate contamination control in oxygen systems is imperative to minimize hazards and component failures that can result from contamination. Contamination must also be minimized to ensure an acceptable product purity.5.4 Removal of contaminants from materials and components depends on system configuration, materials of construction, and type and quantity of contaminant.5.5 Examples of cleaning procedures contained herein may be followed or specified for those materials, components, and equipment indicated. The general cleaning text can be used to establish cleaning procedures for materials, components, equipment, and applications not addressed in detail. See Guide G127 for discussion of cleaning agent and procedure selection.1.1 This guide covers the selection of methods and apparatus for cleaning materials and equipment intended for service in oxygen-enriched environments. Contamination problems encountered in the use of enriched air, mixtures of oxygen with other gases, or any other oxidizing gas may be solved by the same cleaning procedures applicable to most metallic and nonmetallic materials and equipment.
