8.1 This specification describes types (based on resistance to tearing and compression set), grades (based on durometer hardness), class (based on flame propagation requirements), and surfaces (based on surface characteristics) of products as listed in Section 4 for various applications. It is essential, therefore, that the applicable type, grade, class, and surface be specified, as well as other options stated, so that the proper product is provided for the intended use.AbstractThis standard specification describes products composed of dense elastomeric silicone rubber gaskets and accessories for use in sealing and glazing applications in building constructions. The products are classified according to type, hardness, class, and surface. Types include tear resistant and compression set resistant products. Surface of the product shall be smooth, clean, free from foreign matter, and shall not allow adhesion of sealants. Silicone rubber shall be manufactured from virgin polymer and shall be free from visible internal porosity, surface defects, and dimensional irregularities. The compound color shall be black unless specified otherwise. Test methods for the product shall include low temperature flexibility, hardness, compression, tensile strength, ultimate elongation, heat aging, ozone resistance, tear strength, flame propagation, specific gravity, staining, and color tests.1.1 This specification describes products composed of dense elastomeric silicone rubber that are fabricated into gaskets and accessories (such as setting blocks, spacers, and shims) for use in sealing and glazing applications in building construction. 5.1 This test method is designed to differentiate the flame propagation characteristics of dense or cellular elastomeric compounds used in gaskets, setting blocks, shims, or spacers. It is a small scale test which enables the specifier to exercise engineering judgment in the selection of materials.5.2 In this test method, the specimens are subjected to a specific laboratory fire test exposure condition. If different test conditions are substituted or the anticipated end-use conditions are changed, it may not be possible by or from this test method to predict changes in the performance characteristics. 4.1 The purpose of this classification is to identify potential concerns and effects which may occur during the life cycle (installation, service, removal, and disposal) of insulation materials and accessories resulting from direct contact or indirect action or events.4.2 This classification does not identify remedial or preventive steps that may be taken to correct potential problems or hazards; rather it is intended as a checklist that will make it easier to deal constructively with these potentials, and to determine what, if any, specific requirements need to be added to other standards concerning insulation materials or accessories. 5.1 This is not a routine test. The values recorded are applicable only to the tank being tested and at the time of testing. This test is intended only to demonstrate the sealing effectiveness of the installed system. Structural design of the tank is defined or demonstrated within the scope of other applicable specifications and test methods, including Specification C1227.1.1 This test method covers procedures for testing precast concrete tanks (and installed accessories) used for on-site wastewater treatment, grease interception, grit/oil separation, water storage, or other applications requiring watertight construction and installation. This test method uses partial vacuum to demonstrate the integrity of the installed materials and the construction processes.1.2 This test method is intended to be used to demonstrate the condition of the installed system (precast concrete tank and accessories) prior to backfill.1.3 Testing of the system before backfill is necessary so as to preclude inadvertent structural overloading of the system components during the test.NOTE 1: Vacuum test criteria presented in this test method are similar to those in general use.
