This specification covers the design, material, and minimum performance requirements of resilient connectors used for connections between reinforced concrete manhole structures and corrugated high density polyethylene drainage pipes. These connectors are designed to provide a positive seal between the pipe and manholes or other structures subjected to internal and external hydrostatic pressures. The design of the connector shall be such that positive seal is accomplished at two locations: (1) between the connector and the wall of the manhole or structure and (2) between the connector and the pipe. This specification covers prefabricated modified bituminous sheet materials with polyester fabric reinforcement, with or without granules, that use atactic polypropylene (APP) as the primary modifier and are intended for use in the fabrication of multiple ply roofing and waterproofing membranes. Type I and II modified bituminous sheet materials reinforced with polyester fabric, with granule surfacing (Grade G) and smooth surfacing (Grade S) are covered by this specification The APP modified bituminous coating shall be permitted to be compounded with a mineral stabilizer. To prevent sticking in the roll, the reverse side and any selvage shall be permitted to be covered with a fine mineral surfacing or any other surfacing that will not interfere with adhesion or bonding of the lap. The sheet shall conform to the minimum physical properties prescribed for: peak load, elongation, ultimate elongation, tear strength, low temperature flexibility, dimensional stability, compound stability, granule embedment, water absorption, moisture content, and low temperature unrolling. The finished product shall conform to the requirements prescribed for net mass and dimensions such as width of roll, area of roll, selvage width, thickness, and bottom side coating thickness. This specification covers polypropylene materials, suitable for injection molding and extrusion, that include unreinforced polypropylene with natural color only, unfilled and unreinforced polypropylene, calcium carbonate filled polypropylene, glass reinforced polypropylene, polypropylene copolymers, and talc filled polypropylene. Polymers consist of homopolymer, copolymers, and elastomer compounded with or without the addition of impact modifiers (ethylene-propylene rubber, polyisobutylene rubber, and butyl rubber), colorants, stabilizers, lubricants, or reinforcements. Tests shall be conducted on each of the specimens to determine the required physical and mechanical properties of the materials. The specimens for the various materials shall conform to the following requirements: nominal flow rate; test specimen dimensions; tensile stress at yield; flexural modulus; Izod impact resistance; deflection temperature; and multiaxial impact ductile-brittle transition temperature.1.1 This classification system covers polypropylene materials suitable for injection molding and extrusion. 4.1 The tensile elongation property determined by this practice is of value for the characterization of degradable materials. It is possible that the tensile elongation property will vary with specimen thickness, method of preparation, speed of testing, type of grips used, and manner of measuring test extension. Consequently, where precise comparative results are desired, these factors must be carefully controlled.4.2 It is acceptable to use the tensile elongation property to provide data for research and development and engineering design as well as quality control specifications. However, data from such tests cannot be considered significant for applications differing widely from the load-time scale of the test employed.4.3 Materials that fail by tearing give anomalous data that cannot be compared with those from normal failure.4.4 Before proceeding with this test method, reference needs to be made to the specifications of the material being tested. Any test specimen preparation, conditioning, dimensions, or testing parameters or a combination thereof, covered in the material specifications shall take precedence over those mentioned in this test method. If there are no material specifications, then the default conditions apply.1.1 This practice covers the determination of a degradation-end point (a brittle point) for degradable polyethylene/polypropylene films and sheeting less than 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) thick. This practice is not intended for determination of the rate or degree of degradation of a polyethylene/polypropylene film or sheet, but rather, to assess when in the course of its degradation under some condition, a brittle point is reached. If one wishes to monitor tensile elongation during the degradation process (such as when the tensile elongation is significantly greater than 5 %), Test Method D882 is recommended. This practice is not to be considered the only way of determining a degradation-end point.1.2 Tensile properties of plastics 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) or greater in thickness shall be determined in accordance with Test Method D638.1.3 Use a static weighing-constant rate of grip separation test. 5.1 Separation and identification of stabilizers used in the manufacture of polypropylene is necessary in order to correlate performance properties with polymer composition. This test method provides a means to determine erucamide slip, Vitamin E, Irgafos 168, Irganox 3114, Irganox 1010, and Irganox 1076 levels in polypropylene samples. This test method is also applicable for the determination of other antioxidants, such as Ultranox 626, Ethanox 330, Santanox R, and BHT, but the applicability of this test method has not been investigated for these antioxidants.5.2 The additive-extraction procedure is made effective by the insolubility of the polymer sample in solvents generally used for liquid chromatographic analysis.5.3 Under optimum conditions, the lowest level of detection for a phenolic antioxidant is approximately 2 ppm.NOTE 2: Other methods that have been used successfully to remove additives from the plastics matrix include thin film, microwave, ultrasonic, and supercritical fluid extractions. Other methods have been used successfully to separate additives including SFC and capillary GC.5.4 Irgafos 168 is a phosphite antioxidant. Phosphites are known to undergo both oxidation and hydrolysis reactions. Less Irgafos 168 will be determined in the polymer when oxidation occurs during processing. The HPLC separation is capable of separating the phosphite, phosphate (oxidation product), and hydrolysis product and quantify them if standards are obtained. No significant breakdown of the phosphite antioxidant has been seen due to either extraction technique or the separation presented in this standard.1.1 This test method covers a liquid-chromatographic procedure for the separation of some additives currently used in polypropylene. These additives are extracted with a cyclohexane:methylene chloride mixture using either reflux or ultrasonic bath prior to liquid-chromatographic separation. The ultraviolet absorbance (200 nm) of the compound(s) is measured, and quantitation is performed using the internal standard method.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 5.1 When a drop of liquid rests on the surface of a solid, and a gas is in contact with both, the forces acting at the interfaces must balance. These forces can be represented by surface energies acting in the direction of the surfaces and it follows that: where: θ   =   angle of contact of the edge of the drop with the solid surface, γGL   =   surface energy of the gas - liquid interface, γGS   =   surface energy of the gas - solid interface, and γSL   =   surface energy of the solid - liquid interface. 5.1.1 The right side of the above equation (the difference between the surface energies of the gas - solid and solid - liquid interfaces) is defined as the wetting tension of the solid surface. It is not a fundamental property of the surface but depends on interaction between the solid and a particular environment. 5.1.2 When the gas is air saturated with vapors of the liquid, γGL will be the surface tension of the liquid. If the angle of contact is 0° the liquid is said to just wet the surface of the solid, and in this particular case (since cos θ = 1) the wetting tension of the solid will be equal to the surface tension of the liquid. 5.2 The ability of polyethylene and polypropylene films to retain inks, coatings, adhesives, etc., is primarily dependent upon the character of their surfaces, and can be improved by one of several surface-treating techniques. These same treating techniques have been found to increase the wetting tension of a polyethylene or a polypropylene film surface in contact with mixtures of formamide and ethyl Cellosolve in the presence of air. It is therefore possible to relate the wetting tension of a polyethylene or a polypropylene film surface to its ability to accept and retain inks, coatings, adhesives, etc. The measured wetting tension of a specific film surface can only be related to acceptable ink, coating, or adhesive retention through experience. Wetting tension in itself is not a completely acceptable measure of ink, coating, or adhesive adhesion. Note 3: A wetting tension of 35 dynes/cm or higher has been generally found to reveal a degree of treatment normally regarded as acceptable for tubular film made from Type 1 polyethylene and intended for commercial flexographic printing. It is, however, possible that some other level of wetting tension may be required to indicate the acceptability of polyethylene films made by other processes, or from other types of polyethylene, or intended for other uses. At the present date, insufficient experience has been gained to state a generally acceptable level of wetting tension for polypropylene films for commercial flexographic printing. 1.1 This test method covers the measurement of the wetting tension of a polyethylene or polypropylene film surface in contact with drops of specific test solutions in the presence of air. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. Note 1: This test method and the specified reagents were specifically developed for polyethylene and polypropylene films. It is possible to utilize this test method and the specified reagents for films composed of other polymers, but this can affect the surface energies of the gas-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces, which will affect the contact angle and wetting tension.
