Protective eyewear offers protection only to the eyes and does not protect other parts of the head. Protectors are divided into four types depending on their design characteristics as follows: Type I—A protector with the lens or lenses and frame frontpiece molded as one unit. Frame temples or other devices, such as straps, to affix the lens/frontpiece may be separate pieces; Type II—A protector with a single lens or lenses, either plano or prescription, mounted in a frame that was manufactured as a separate unit; Type III—A protector without a lens; and Type IV—A full or partial face shield. Materials shall be tested using optical tests such as field of view, optical quality, luminous transmittance, prismatic deviation measurements, haze, refractive power measurements, surface imperfections and internal defects, and alternate optical tests; and mechanical tests such as high velocity impact resistance, and projectile simulator test. In addition, the individual grades shall conform to the general, and performance requirements.1.1 This specification covers eye protectors, designed for use by players of basketball, baseball, and soccer to minimize or significantly reduce injury to the eye and adnexa due to impact and penetration by baseballs and softballs, basketballs, soccer balls, hands, elbows, and fingers. Protective eyewear offers protection only to the eyes and adnexa and does not protect other parts of the head.1.2 Protectors are divided into three types depending on their design characteristics.1.3 This specification applies to eye protectors for use by wearers of corrective lenses and also by those players who do not require prescription eyewear. (Warning—Polycarbonate or Trivex spectacle lenses should be used if spectacles are worn under protective eyewear.)1.4 In this standard, the use of the words “shall” or “must” indicates a mandatory requirement. The word “should” indicates a recommendation.1.5 Failure of the product occurs when the protector is unable to meet the general, mechanical, and optical (if applicable) requirements of the standard.1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. Metric units of measurement in this specification are in accordance with the International System of Units (SI). If a value for measurement as given in this specification is followed by an equivalent value in other units, the first stated is to be regarded as the requirement. A given equivalent value may be approximate.1.7 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test methods portions, Sections 9 – 11, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.8 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

AbstractThese test methods establish the apparatuses required, standard procedures, and associated calculations for determining the particle size distribution and shape grading of sand in golf course putting green and other sand-based sports field rootzone mixtures assumed to have sand contents of 80 % by weight or greater. Particles large enough to be retained on a No. 270 sieve are determined by sieving, while, the silt and clay percentages are determined by a sedimentation process using the pipet method.1.1 This test method covers the determination of particle size distribution of putting green and other sand-based rootzone mixes. Particles larger than 0.05 mm (retained on a No. 270 sieve) are determined by sieving. The silt and clay percentages are determined by a sedimentation process, using the pipet method. This procedure was developed for putting green rootzone mixes, those assumed to have sand contents of 80 % by weight or greater. Particle size analysis of soils may be performed by this test method or Test Method D422. This test method also describes a qualitative evaluation of sand particle shape.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 To test the shear strength of a materials describing how the material resists sliding of surface layers. Data from these tests are used to calculate the friction angle and cohesion of a surface sample. This test can be used to help determine if a material falls within a suitable for equine sports surfaces.1.1 This adapted test method covers the determination of strength and stress-strain relationships of a cylindrical specimen of a compacted, drained cohesive natural or synthetic soil surface used in equine sports surfaces. Specimens are isotropically consolidated and sheared in compression at a constant rate of axial deformation (strain controlled).1.2 The shear strength of an equine sports surface material describes the resistance of the material to sliding of the surface layers. Shear strength influences both slide and penetration of the hoof in the track surface. It is generally accepted that a small amount of slide on impact is desirable (1-3).2 However, the surface must have sufficient shear strength to support the horse during propulsion (1-5). Thus, an optimal shear strength would be expected for an equestrian surface.1.3 To determine the shear strength of an equine sports surface, a representative dirt or synthetic sample is placed into a cylindrical cell and a vertical load is applied. Shear strength is measured as per the procedures outlined in Test Method D4767 for lab-consolidated samples. This ASTM standard was adapted by Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory for the drained condition to more accurately model the conditions of an equestrian surface.1.4 Dirt samples are tested over a range of forming moisture contents to determine the maximum bulk density and optimal forming moisture content for a given energy input. The dirt samples are then compacted at this optimal moisture content. The maximum stress failure criteria is assumed and results are presented as the failure stress at 15 psi confining pressure versus sample forming moisture content, along with friction angle and cohesion.1.5 Synthetic samples with good drainage are tested at a 4% forming moisture content, and over a specified range of temperatures. The temperature is controlled using a heated/refrigerated water bath with a triaxial cell cap fitted with a copper coil. Failure criteria is assumed under similar conditions for the dirt surfaces, and results are presented as the failure stress at 15 psi confining pressure versus sample temperature, along with friction angle and cohesion.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
