5.1 The significance of this test method in any overall measurement program directed toward a service application will depend on the relative match of test conditions to the conditions of the service application.5.2 This test method seeks only to prescribe the general test procedure and method of calculating and reporting data. 4.1 Intact block samples are suitable for laboratory tests where large-sized samples of intact material are required or where such sampling is more practical than conventional tube sampling (Practices D1587/D1587M and D6519), or both.4.2 The intact block method of sampling is advantageous where the soil to be sampled is near the ground surface. It is the best available method for obtaining large intact samples of very stiff and brittle soils, partially cemented soils, and some soils containing coarse gravel.4.3 Excavating a column of soil will relieve stresses in the soil and may result in some expansion of the soil and a corresponding decrease in its unit weight (density) or increase in sampling disturbance, or both. Usually the expansion is small in magnitude because of the shallow depth. Stress changes alone can cause enough disturbances in some soils to significantly alter their engineering properties.4.4 The chain saw has proved advantageous in sampling difficult soils, which are blocky, slickensided, or materials containing alternating layers of hard and soft material.3 The chain saw uses a special carbide-tipped chain.4NOTE 1: The quality of the result produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective sampling. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D3740 does not in itself assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; Practice D3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors.1.1 These practices outline the procedures for obtaining intact block (cubical and cylindrical) soil samples.1.2 Intact block samples are obtained for laboratory tests to determine the strength, consolidation, permeability, and other geotechnical engineering or physical properties of the intact soil.1.3 Two sampling practices are presented. For these conditions, use of a thin-walled push tube soil sampler (Practice D1587/D1587M), a piston-type soil sampler (Practice D6519), or Hollow-Stem Auger (Practice D6151/D6151M), Dennison, or Pitcher-type soil core samplers, or freezing the soil and coring may be required.1.5 These practices do not address environmental sampling; consult Guides D6169/D6169M and D6232 for information on sampling for environmental investigations.1.6 Successful sampling of granular materials requires sufficient cohesion, cementation, or apparent cohesion (due to moisture tension (suction)) of the soil for it to be isolated in a column shape without undergoing excessive deformations. Additionally, care must be exercised in the excavation, preservation and transportation of intact samples (see Practice D4220/D4220M, Group D).1.7 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units [given in brackets] are to be regarded separately as standard. 5.1 These test methods are to be used to determine the resistance of some types of preformed block insulation when transverse loads are normally applied to the surface. Values are measured at the maximum load or breaking point under specified conditions or specimen size, span between supports, and rate of load application. The equations used are based on the assumption that the materials are uniform and presume that the stress-strain characteristics below the elastic limit are linearly elastic. These assumptions are not strictly applicable to thermal insulations of certain types in which crushing occurs before failure is obtained in transverse bending; however, depending upon the accuracy required, these procedures are capable of providing acceptable results.5.2 Test Method I is especially useful when testing only for the modulus of rupture or the breaking load. This information is useful for quality control inspection and qualification for specification purposes.5.3 Test Method II is useful in determining the elastic modulus in bending as well as the flexural strength. Flexural properties determined by these test methods are also useful for quality control and specification purposes.5.4 The basic differences between the two test methods is in the location of the maximum bending moment, maximum axial fiber (flexural or tensile) stresses, and the resolved stress state in terms of shear stress and tensile/compression stress. The maximum axial fiber stresses occur on a line under the loading fitting in Test Method I and over the area between the loading fittings in Test Method II. Test Method I has a high shear stress component in the direction of loading, perpendicular to the axial fiber stress. Sufficient resolved shear stress is capable of producing failure by a shear mode rather than a simple tension/flexural failure. There is no comparable shear component in the central region between the loading fittings in Test Method II. Test Method II simulates a uniformly loaded beam in terms of equivalent stresses at the center of the specimen.5.5 Flexural properties are capable of varying with specimen span-to-thickness ratio, temperature, atmospheric conditions, and the difference in rate of straining specified in Procedures A and B. In comparing results it is important that all parameters be equivalent. Increases in the strain rate typically result in increased strengths and in the elastic modulus.1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the breaking load and calculated flexural strength of a rectangular cross section of a preformed block-type thermal insulation tested as a simple beam. It is also applicable to cellular plastics. Two test methods are described as follows:1.1.1 Test Method I—A loading system utilizing center loading on a simply supported beam, supported at both ends.1.1.2 Test Method II—A loading system utilizing two symmetric load points equally spaced from their adjacent support points at each end with a distance between load points of one half of the support span.1.2 Either test method is capable of being used with the four procedures that follow:1.2.1 Procedure A—Designed principally for materials that break at comparatively small deflections.1.2.2 Procedure B—Designed particularly for those materials that undergo large deflections during testing.1.2.3 Procedure C—Designed for measuring at a constant stress rate, using a CRL (constant rate of loading) machine. Used for breaking load measurements only.1.2.4 Procedure D—Designed for measurements at a constant crosshead speed, using either a CRT (constant rate of traverse) or CRE (constant rate of extension) machine. Used for breaking load measurements using a fixed crosshead speed machine.1.3 Comparative tests are capable of being run according to either method or procedure, provided that the method or procedure is found satisfactory for the material being tested.1.4 These test methods are purposely general in order to accommodate the widely varying industry practices. This specification covers mineral fiber block and board thermal insulation. Mineral fiber board insulation covered by this specification shall be classified into types and categories; category 1 - no compressive resistance properties are required, category 2 - minimum compressive resistance properties are required, type V, grade A - requires no heat-up schedule, type V, grade B - heat-up schedule is required. Mineral fiber block and semi-rigid and rigid board insulation shall be composed of rock, slag, or glass processed from the molten state into fibrous form and bonded with organic or inorganic binders or both. A detectable odor of objectionable nature recorded by more than two of five panel members shall constitute rejection. When tested and evaluated, the corrosion resulting from insulation in contact with steel plates shall be judged to be no greater than for comparative plates in contact with sterile cotton. When tested and evaluated at its delivered thickness, all mineral fiber (rock, slag, and glass) board and block must qualify to be semi-rigid or rigid. When tested, the board and block insulation shall not warp, flame, or glow during hot surface exposure. When tested, the midpoint temperature shall not at any time exceed the hot surface temperature by more than 200°F (111°C). Determine the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature for the representative specimens with data obtained from a series of thermal tests. The compressive resistance, linear shrinkage, water vapour sorption, odor emission, and rigidity or semi-rigidity shall be tested to meet the requirements prescribed.1.1 This specification covers the classification, composition, dimension, and physical properties of mineral fiber (rock, slag, or glass) semi-rigid and rigid board intended for the use as thermal insulation on surfaces operating at temperatures between 0°F (-18°C) and 1800°F (982°C). For specific applications, the actual temperature limits shall be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser.1.2 For satisfactory performance, properly installed protective vapor retarder or barriers shall be used on below ambient temperature applications to reduce movement of water through or around the insulation towards the colder surface. Failure to use a vapor retarder or barrier can lead to insulation and system damage. Refer to Practice C921 to aid material selection. Although vapor retarder properties are not part of this specification, properties required in Specification C1136 are pertinent to applications or performance.1.3 The orientation of the fibers within the boards is primarily parallel to the principal surface (face). 5.1 This standard is intended for use by designers and contractors to assist in understanding the importance of proper installation of articulating concrete block revetment systems in order to achieve suitable hydraulic performance and maintain stability against the erosive force of flowing water.5.2 An articulating concrete block system is comprised of a matrix of individual concrete blocks placed together to form an erosion-resistant overlay with specific hydraulic performance characteristics. The system includes a geotextile underlay compatible with the subsoil that allows hydraulic infiltration and exfiltration to occur while providing particle retention. The blocks within the matrix shall be dense and durable and the matrix shall be flexible and porous.5.3 Articulating concrete block systems are used to provide erosion protection to underlying soil materials from the forces of flowing water. The term “articulating,” as used in this standard, implies the ability of individual blocks of the system to conform to changes in the subgrade while remaining interconnected by virtue of block interlock and/or additional system components such as cables, ropes, geotextiles, or geogrids.5.4 The definition of articulating concrete block systems does not distinguish between interlocking and non-interlocking block geometries, between cable-tied and non-cable-tied systems, between vegetated and non-vegetated systems or between methods of manufacturing or placement. This test method is intended primarily to differentiate between liquid thin film lubricants which exhibit the properties of Newtonian flow with respect to their endurance (wear) life and load carrying capacity when they are used in a manner similar to the bonded dry solid film lubricants. (See Test Method D 2625 for definition of dry solid film lubricants.) The test conditions for thin film lubricants are very critical and must be maintained to ensure reliability of the data when used to compare different lubricants.Liquid thin film lubricants which exhibit the properties of non-Newtonian flow can also be tested if the procedure for preparing the pin and vee blocks is modified to account for their different behavior.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the endurance (wear) life and load carrying capacity of thin film fluid lubricants that are intended to operate after a single application and after excess material has drained from the contact area of sliding metal to metal surfaces, and which operates in what functionally is a drain and dry mode with no additional lubricant being applied.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard except where equipment is supplied using inch-pound units which would then be regarded as the standard.
