This specification covers pressure-sensitive tapes of film, paper, and cloth types, with applications in packaging, box closure, and sealing. Covered in this specification are five types of tape: waterproof, weather-resistant, polyester-backed tape (Type I), water-resistant polyester-backed tape (Type II), water-resistant polypropylene-backed tape (Type III), water-resistant woven-cloth-backed tape (Type IV), and weather-resistant paper-backed tape. The tape shall be manufactured with film, paper, or cloth backing, coated with a smooth and uniformly distributed layer of pressure-sensitive water-insoluble adhesive. 5.1 This test method provides a means of automatically separating and collecting atmospheric particulate and acidic gaseous fluoride samples.5.2 Since the samples are collected on dry tapes, the samples are in a form which allows elution of the fluoride content with a small volume of eluent. 4.1 If a coating is to fulfill its function of protecting or imparting unique properties to the surface of a substrate, it must adhere to the substrate for the expected service life. Because surface preparation (or lack of it) has a drastic effect on adhesion of coatings, a test method for evaluating adhesion to different surface treatments or of different coatings to the same treatment is of considerable use to the industry.4.2 The limitations of all adhesion methods, and the specific limitation of this test method to lower levels of adhesion (see 1.3) should be recognized before using it. These test methods are mechanized adaptations of Test Methods D3359; therefore, the intra- and interlaboratory precision of these test methods are similar to Test Methods D3359 and to other widely-accepted tests for coated substrates, for example, Test Method D2370, but this is partly the result of it being insensitive to all but large differences in adhesion. The pass-fail scale of 0 to 5 for Method B1 and B2 was selected deliberately to avoid a false impression of being sensitive.1.1 These test methods describe procedures for assessing the adhesion of metallic and inorganic coatings and other thin films to metallic and nonmetallic substrates. Assessment is made by applying pressure-sensitive tape to a coated surface and then utilizing a mechanical device to remove the tape at a regulated, uniform rate and constant angle while simultaneously recording the removal force.1.2 Four methods are described. Methods A1 and A2 are intended primarily for use on parts. Methods B1 and B2 are intended primarily for use in laboratory evaluations. Methods B1 and B2 are not recommended for testing coatings and films on polymer substrates.1.3 These test methods may be used to establish whether the adhesion of a coating to a substrate is within a required range (between a quantified low and a quantified high level). Determination of actual adhesive forces requires more sophisticated methods of measurement. 4.1 Pressure-sensitive film tapes are supplied in roll form. For such a tape to be useful a strip of the tape must be easily dispensed or severed from the roll by means of a cutter found on most dispensers. This test method is a means of measuring the ease of this severing or dispensing of the tape.4.2 This test method provides information that can be used in material specifications for product design and quality assurance applications. 4.1 This practice defines a consistent procedure for collecting surface material using clear, transparent, single sided adhesive collection medium, typically tape (also known as tape lift).4.2 A tape lift sample collected according to this practice is intended to be used to assess the material present at one specific location on a surface for fungal content.4.3 A tape lift sample collected from a point of interest can be used for qualitative analysis or to quantify fungal material per sample or per unit area. 3.1 The tape lift provides a rapid and simple technique for removing particles from a surface and determining their number and size distribution.3.2 By using statistically determined sample size and locations, an estimate of the surface cleanliness level of large areas can be made. The user shall define the sampling plan.3.3 The sampling plan shall consider the importance of surface geometry and surface orientation to gas flow, gravity, obstructions, and previous history of hardware. These factors influence particle fallout and entrapment of particles on the surface. The geometry of joints, recessed areas, fasteners, and the correspondence of particle-count data to area can be maintained.3.4 The selection of tape and the verification of its effect on the cleanliness of the hardware is very important. The tape adhesive should have sufficient cohesion to avoid transfer of the adhesive to the surface under test. The impact of adhesive transfer should be evaluated by laboratory testing before using the tape on the hardware. Since potential for adhesive transfer exists, cleaning to remove any adhesive might be required. In addition, the tape should have low outgassing characteristics, and as a minimum, it should meet the requirements of less than 1.0 % total mass loss (TML) and 0.1 % collected volatile condensable materials (CVCM), as measured by Test Method E595.3.5 Care should be exercised in deciding which surfaces should be tested by this practice. The tape can remove marginally adhering paint and coatings. Optical surfaces should not be tested until verification has been made that the surface coating will not be damaged. The minimum effectiveness of particle removal from smooth surfaces and angles down to 90° for all practice methods is 90 % for particles larger than 5 μm. Rough surface finishes result in low removal efficiencies. Surface finishes up to approximately 3.20 μm (125 μin.) have been tested and found to give satisfactory results.3.6 This practice has been tested only on surfaces at room temperature. Evaluation of temperature effects must be conducted prior to using the test on surfaces other than room temperature.3.7 Only personnel experienced in microscopic particle-counting techniques should be used to count and size the particles.1.1 This practice covers procedures for sampling surfaces to determine the presence of particulate contamination, 5 μm and larger. The practice consists of the application of a pressure-sensitive tape to the surface followed by the removal of particulate contamination with the removal of the tape. The tape with the adhering particles is then mounted on counting slides. Counting and measuring of particles is done by standard techniques.1.2 This practice describes the materials and equipment required to perform sampling of surfaces for particle counting and sizing.1.3 The criteria for acceptance or rejection of a part for conformance to surface cleanliness level requirements shall be determined by the user and are not included in this practice.1.4 This practice is for use on surfaces that are not damaged by the application of adhesive tape. The use of this practice on any surface of any material not previously tested, or for which the susceptibility to damage is unknown, is not recommended. In general, metals, metal plating, and oxide coatings will not be damaged. Application to painted, vapor deposited, and optical coatings should be evaluated before implementing this test.1.5 This practice provides three methods to evaluate tape lift tests, as follows:Practice Sections   A—This method uses light transmitted through the tape and tape adhesive to detect particles that adhere to it. 4 to 6 B—This method uses light transmitted through the tape adhesive after bonding to a base microscope slide, dissolving the tape backing, and a cover slide. The particles are embedded in the adhesive, and air bubbles are eliminated with acrylic mounting media. 7 to 9 C—This method uses light reflected off the tape adhesive to detect particles that adhere to it. 10 to 121.6 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. This specification covers four types and two grades of skived tapes in specified thicknesses manufactured by skiving from PTFE resin molding and extrusion materials. This specification covers various types, classes, and grades of flexible graphite material in which valve media temperatures are limited to a maximum temperature. The material shall be classified into two types, classes, and grades. Type I is a corrugated ribbon or textured tape, Type II is die-formed ring. Class 1 is for use where detrimental material content of the packing need not be controlled beyond normal manufacturing limit and Class 2 is for use where detrimental material content must be controlled to the limits specified herein. 5.1 This guide is designed to assist an examiner in the selection of appropriate sample preparation methods for the analysis, comparison, and identification of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes. If no meaningful differences are noted between the known and unknown samples regarding physical appearance or measurements, then IR spectroscopy should be the next step in the analytical scheme.5.2 Infrared spectroscopy can provide molecular information regarding major organic and inorganic components. For various reasons, components in lesser amounts are typically more difficult to identify unequivocally. Reasons for this include interference of the absorption bands of the major components with the less intense bands of minor components and sensitivity issues whereby the minor components are present at concentrations below the detection limits of the instrument.5.3 Infrared spectroscopy can be used to obtain spectra for elucidation of the chemical composition of a tape and for comparison of two or more tape samples. When used for spectral comparisons, the objective is to determine whether any meaningful differences exist between the samples.1.1 Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is a valuable method for the identification and comparison of pressure sensitive tapes (1-20).2 This guide provides basic recommendations and information about infrared spectrometers and accessories, with an emphasis on sampling techniques specific to pressure sensitive tape examinations.
