This specification covers one grade of virgin zirconium metal commonly designated as sponge because of its porous, sponge-like texture, but it may also take other forms such as chunklets. The one grade described is designated as Reactor Grade R60001, suitable for use in nuclear applications. The main characteristic of the reactor grade is its low nuclear cross section as achieved by removal of hafnium. Zirconium metal is usually prepared by reduction of zirconium tetrachloride, and gets its physical characteristics from the processes involved in production. These characteristics may be expected to vary greatly with manufacturing methods. Only virgin zirconium metal, in identified, uniform, well-mixed blends, shall be used. 4.1 Paint spatter generated by roller application is dependent on the properties of both the paint being applied and the paint roller cover used for the application. To eliminate the influence of the paint roller cover as a variable, and thus restrict the spatter-inducing variable to the paint under test only, the paint roller cover is replaced by a standard notched spool roller to generate spatter by a mechanism that simulates that of a paint-applying roller cover.4.2 Although most of the development work to establish this test method was undertaken using latex paints, sufficient work was also done to show its applicability to solvent-reducible paints.4.3 Tests during the development of this test method showed that the spattering properties of paints, like other physical properties, may in time change. This specification covers UNS R60001, R60802, R60804, and R60901 wrought zirconium and zirconium alloy bars, rods, and wires. All material grades covered should conform to the required chemical composition requirements. Elements that are intentionally added to the melt should be identified, analyzed and reported in the chemical analysis. The zirconium and zirconium alloys should be made from ingots produced by vacuum or plasma arc melting, vacuum electron-beam melting, a combination of the three methods, or other melting processes conventionally used for reactive metals. All processes should be performed in furnaces specifically for reactive metals. Mill products included in this specification should be formed with conventional extrusion, forging, or rolling equipment that is used in primary ferrous and nonferrous plants. 4.1 Laboratory measurement of application properties of architectural coatings generally employ a blade-type applicators that lay down films of highly uniform thickness. 4.1 This practice provides minimum requirements for the ensurance of safety and efficacy. This specification covers the standard requirements for the application of full thickness Portland cement-based plaster for exterior (stucco) and interior work. It also sets forth tables for proportioning of various plaster mixes and plaster thickness. 4.1 Insulations that are used as a part of the thermal insulation system in contact with austenitic stainless steels have the potential to become contaminated with water soluble corrosive ions which, in turn, if permitted to reach the stainless steel surface, are possible to contribute to external stress corrosion cracking (ESCC). Therefore, it is important to reduce the exposure of such insulating materials to water-soluble corrosive ion compounds at all stages of manufacture, handling, shipping, storage, and application. During manufacture, precautions shall be taken to minimize water soluble corrosive ion content, both in the material and as surface contamination. Once the manufacture is complete, care must be exercised during handling, transporting, shipping, storage, receiving, and application to avoid contamination with corrosive ions that can be transported by water through the insulation materials onto the stainless steel surface. This practice presents criteria which, if followed, will minimize the risks of ESCC associated with the application of insulation materials. It must be emphasized, however, that because of the many variable factors present, complete freedom from ESCC can not be assured under all circumstances, even when following the guidance of this practice.4.2 Continued protection of the insulation and the stainless steel surface from moisture and contamination after the insulation system is installed and over its entire service life is of significant importance. In-service contamination has the potential to occur from many sources; for example, from airborne contaminates, rain or salt spray, periodic fire sprinkler system tests, wash-downs, or process leakage. Weather barrier jacketing systems and proper application shall be chosen to provide long-term protection in the intended use environment.4.3 The entire insulation system shall be periodically inspected and maintained. Insulation that is suspected of contamination shall be retested or immediately replaced. Wash down of insulated pipe and equipment shall be avoided.
