This specification establishes the performance requirements for helmets used by off-road motorcycle and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riders. It provides additional performance requirements including positional stability and performance criteria for chin bars on full-facial coverage helmets if the helmet is equipped with a chin bar. It does not require that helmets provide full facial coverage and is not intended to restrict design. This specification covers labels and warnings, marking of the test line, conditioning and number of samples, impact sites, roll-off testing, chin bar rigidity test, and compliance documentation.1.1 This specification covers performance requirements for helmets used by off-road motorcycle and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riders.1.2 Compliance with the federally mandated FMVSS No. 218 shall be documented as part of compliance with this ASTM standard.1.3 This specification provides additional performance requirements including positional stability and performance criteria for chin bars on full-facial coverage helmets if the helmet is equipped with a chin bar.1.4 This standard does not require that helmets provide full facial coverage.1.5 This is a performance specification and is not intended to restrict design.1.6 All testing and requirements of this specification shall be in accordance with Test Methods F1446, except where noted herein.1.7 Partial utilization of this standard is prohibited. This specification covers performance requirements for helmets used by downhill mountain bicycle riders. Studies have shown higher risk to the head and face for this sport as compared to recreational street riding; hence, this specification requires greater impact protection and provides performance criteria for chin bars on full-face helmets, but does not require full-face helmets. Retention system tests shall be performed before impact testing. The helmet can be impacted anywhere on or above the test line with the curbstone anvil in any horizontal orientation. The ambient test helmet shall be subjected to the chin bar impact test.1.1 This specification covers performance requirements for helmets used by downhill mountain bicycle riders. 4.1 The purpose of these test methods is to provide reliable and repeatable tests for the evaluation of various types of protective headgear when subjected to rotational loading. Use of these test methods in conjunction with the specific individual performance standards is intended to reduce the likelihood of serious injury and death resulting from impacts to the head sustained by individuals participating in sports, recreation, and other leisure activities in which protective headgear is worn.1.1 This test method covers laboratory equipment, procedures, and basic requirements pertinent to testing the performance of helmets during rotational loading using an incline anvil. Deviations and additions to this test method will be specified, as required, in individual ASTM performance standards.1.2 Requirements—The helmet may be tested under one or more specified environmental conditions for impact attenuation (the limiting of impact forces) as a result of a vertical free-fall onto an incline anvil.1.3 Except where noted, the values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This specification covers performance requirements for helmets manufactured for use by recreational bicyclists or roller skaters. This specification recognizes the desirability of lightweight construction and ventilation; however, it is a performance standard and is not intended to restrict design. Helmets shall be impacted with anvils centered on or above the prescribed test line. The test anvils can be oriented in any horizontal, centered position. One each hot, cold, wet, and ambient helmet shall be impacted using the flat and hemispherical anvils only. The curbstone anvil shall be used to impact one time each of the second set of four samples, one conditioned under each of the four conditioning environments. The peak acceleration of the impulse during the impact shall be measured. The ambient helmet shall be subjected to the positional stability (roll-off) test, while the hot, cold, and wet helmets shall be subjected to the dynamic strength retention test.1.1 This specification covers performance requirements for helmets manufactured for use by recreational bicyclists or roller skaters. This specification defines performance requirements for helmets used in nonmotorized recreational snow sports. The hot, cold, and wet helmets shall be subjected to the dynamic strength retention test. The ambient helmet shall be subjected to the positional stability (roll-off) test. Anvils to be used for impact tests in this specification are described as follows: flat anvil, hemispherical anvil, and edge anvil. All impacting shall be performed in accordance with the specified requirements.1.1 This specification defines performance requirements for helmets used in nonmotorized recreational snow sports (such as skiing, snowboarding, and other alpine sports). This specification is a performance standard and is not intended to restrict design. Although a helmet that meets this specification will help reduce the risk of some types of injuries to the head at slower speeds, the protection is limited. The user is responsible for participating in the sport within his/her abilities and the nature of the snow conditions which may vary widely. Compliance with the common sense rules of the sport's safety, including any applicable responsibility codes, is essential to help reduce the risk of personal injury.1.2 All testing and requirements of this specification shall be in accordance with Test Methods F1446, except where noted herein.1.3 Partial utilization of this specification is prohibited. Any statement of compliance with this specification shall be a certification that the product meets all of the requirements of the specification in its entirety. This specification covers shock absorption requirements for new and reconditioned football helmets for use in competitive play and practice. The parts of the helmet that will be in contact with the head should not be made of materials that are known to cause irritation or disease. The helmet, as tested, should have no rigid external projections greater than the specified dimension and any faceguard or faceguard hardware installed in the helmet must be removed prior to testing. All allowable external projections should be smooth and rounded while all internal rigid projections that can contact the wearer's head should be adequately protected by cushioning or force spreading. Internal shock-absorbing helmet components should not become detached or loose during impact tests or show any permanent deformation or physical damage.1.1 This specification covers new and reconditioned football helmets intended for use in competitive play and practice with particular reference to shock attenuation requirements.1.2 This specification establishes shock absorption requirements of complete helmets when tested in accordance with Test Method F429 and establishes requirements for construction, materials, visibility, and labeling.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
