This specification covers leather protectors for rubber insulating gloves and mittens. Leather protectors shall provide mechanical protection only for the rubber insulating gloves and mittens. Leather material shall be grain cowhide, buffled gain cowhide, grain deerskin, grain pigskin, grain horsehide, or grain goatskin. Leather protectors shall be manufactured in clute, gunn, montpelier, or one-finger mitten patterns. This specification covers the design and minimum performance criteria, and associated test methods (including apparatuses required for) for body protectors used in horse sports and horseback riding. The body protectors shall meet specified requirements for the material used, protector assembly, extent and form of protective material, attachments, and dimension, sizing, and body coverage. The testing procedures that the body protectors shall go through are shock attenuation test, penetration and deformation test, impact sites test, padding separation test, and closure test. Frame temples or other devices, such as straps, to affix the lens/frontpiece may be separate pieces; Type II—A protector with a single lens or lenses, either plano or prescription, mounted in a frame that was manufactured as a separate unit; Type III—A protector without a lens; and Type IV—A full or partial face shield. Materials shall be tested using optical tests such as field of view, optical quality, luminous transmittance, prismatic deviation measurements, haze, refractive power measurements, surface imperfections and internal defects, and alternate optical tests; and mechanical tests such as high velocity impact resistance, and projectile simulator test.
