4.1 This test method simulates the flexing received by upholstery leather in service, and correlation with service is believed to be good. Both the resistance of the finish to cracking and adhesion of the finish to the leather can be evaluated.4.2 The flexing action received by the leather in this method is more severe than that given by methods for shoe upper leather. The less severe tests have little utility in the evaluation of upholstery leather finishes.4.3 This test method is suitable, and has been useful, in research, development, and manufacturing control. It is used as a method of test for specification acceptance. Since this is a subjective test, proper correlation should be established by interlaboratory experience prior to use for specification acceptance.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the flexibility and adhesion of a finish on upholstery leather.2 This test method does not apply to wet blue.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. Bending or creasing of membrane switches or their components can affect their visual appearance, mechanical integrity or electrical functionality. This practice simulates conditions that may be seen during manufacture, installation or use.Bend or crease testing may be destructive, therefore any samples tested should be considered unfit for future use.Specific areas of testing include, but are not limited to:Membrane switch flex tails, andAny component of a membrane switch that may be subjected to bending or creasing.1.1 This practice establishes a method for the creasing or bending of any part of a membrane switch.1.2 This practice can be used with other test methods to achieve specific test results.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 5.1 This practice is valuable in determining the resistance of flexible packaging materials to flex-formed pinholes. Conditioning levels A, B, or C are typically used. Reference Practice E171 and Guide F2097.5.2 Conditions D and E are typically used for determining the effect of flexing on barrier properties and transmission rates related to gas and/or moisture.5.3 This practice does not measure or condition materials for abrasion related to flex failure.5.4 Failures in the integrity of one or more of the plies of a multi-ply structure may require alternative testing. Supplementary permeation testing using gas or water vapor can be used in conjunction with the flex conditioning to measure the loss of ply integrity. Other test methods may be used after flexing for assessment of presence of pinholes. Material structure, testing basis, and a mutual agreement with specified objectives are to be considered in the selection of conditioning level for testing.1.1 This practice covers conditioning of flexible barrier materials for the determination of flex resistance. Subsequent testing can be performed to determine the effects of flexing on material properties. These tests are beyond the scope of this practice.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
