5.1 For most applications, this environment provides an accelerated method of ranking the relative degree of stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility for stainless steels and related alloys in aqueous chloride-containing environments. Materials that normally provide acceptable resistance in hot chloride service may crack in this test. The test may not be relevant to stress-corrosion cracking in polythionic acid or caustic environments.5.2 Resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in boiling magnesium chloride (155.0°C (311.0°F)) should, where possible, be correlated to resistance in service for the materials of interest. However, such correlations may not always be possible.5.3 Boiling magnesium chloride may also cause pitting of many stainless alloys. This leads to the possibility of confusing stress-corrosion failures with mechanical failures induced by corrosion-reduced net cross sections. This danger is particularly great when small cross section samples, high applied stress levels, long exposure periods, stress-corrosion resistant alloys, or a combination thereof are being used. Careful examination is recommended for correct diagnosis of the cause of failure.1.1 This practice describes a procedure for conducting stress-corrosion cracking tests in a boiling magnesium chloride solution. Although this test may be performed using various concentrations of magnesium chloride, this procedure covers a test solution held at a constant boiling temperature of 155.0 ± 1.0°C (311.0 ± 1.8°F). The boiling points of aqueous magnesium chloride solutions at one atmosphere pressure as a function of concentration are shown graphically in Fig. 1.2 A suggested test apparatus capable of maintaining solution concentration and temperature within the prescribed limits for extended periods of time is also described herein.3FIG. 1 Boiling Points of Aqueous Magnesium Chloride Solutions at One Atmosphere as a Function of Concentration21.2 The boiling magnesium chloride test is applicable to wrought, cast, and welded stainless steels and related alloys. This specification covers magnesium-alloy sand castings. The castings shall conform to the chemical composition limits specified. 4.1 Lubricating oils can be formulated with additives, which can act as detergents, anti-oxidants, anti-wear agents, and so forth. Some additives can contain one or more of calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur, and zinc. This test method can be used to determine if the oils, additives, and additive packages meet specification with respect to content of these elements.4.2 Several additive elements and their compounds are added to the lubricating oils to give beneficial performance (Table 3).4.3 This test method can also be used to determine if lubricating oils, additives, and additive packages meet specification with respect to chlorine concentration. In this context, specification can refer to contamination.4.4 This test method is not intended for use on samples that contain some component that significantly interferes with the analysis of the elements specified in the scope.4.5 This test method can complement other test methods for lube oils and additives, including Test Methods D4628, D4927, D4951, and D5185.1.1 This test method covers the determination of calcium, chlorine, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur, and zinc in unused lubricating oils, additives, and additive packages by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Matrix effects are handled with mathematical corrections.1.2 For each element, the upper limit of the concentration range covered by this test method is defined by the highest concentration listed in Table 1. Samples containing higher concentrations can be analyzed following dilution.1.3 For each element, the lower limit of the concentration range covered by this test method can be estimated by the limit of detection (LOD)2 (see also 40 CFR 136 Appendix B) or limit of quantification (LOQ),2 both of which can be estimated from Sr, the repeatability standard deviation. LOD and LOQ values, determined from results obtained in the interlaboratory study on precision, are listed in Table 2.1.3.1 LOD and LOQ are not intrinsic constants of this test method. LOD and LOQ depend upon the precision attainable by a laboratory when using this test method.1.4 This test method uses regression software to determine calibration parameters, which can include influence coefficients (that is, interelement effect coefficients) (Guide E1361), herein referenced as alphas. Alphas can also be determined from theory using relevant software.1.5 Setup of this test method is intended for persons trained in the practice of X-ray spectrometry. 5.1 There are existing lime-based flue gas desulfurization units in operation that require a method to measure the oxides available for sulfur dioxide absorption. Dissolved magnesium oxide varies among limes depending on the limestone sources and calcination conditions.1.1 This test method covers analysis of magnesian, dolomitic and high-calcium limes for total neutralizing capability and dissolved major oxides. Dissolved calcium and magnesium are the major species that neutralize acid under the conditions of the test.1.2 The test conditions are chosen to measure the acid-neutralizing capacity of both calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide contained in slaked lime. By controlling the neutralization pH at 6, magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide are titrated in addition to calcium hydroxide fraction.1.3 This test method also determines the fraction of Mg ions present in the lime that will dissolve under lime flue gas desulfurization (FGD) conditions. This specification covers magnesium alloy permanent mold casting. The castings may be subjected to the heat treatment necessary to produce material that will conform to the requirements specified. Heat treatment shall be performed on the whole of a casting, never on a part only, and shall be applied in a manner that will produce the utmost uniformity. The castings shall be of uniform quality and condition, free of cracks or other injurious defects, and shall be well cleaned by sand blasting or any other approved process before inspection. 5.1 Some oils are formulated with metal-containing additives that act as detergents, antioxidants, antiwear agents, etc. Some of these additives contain one or more of these metals: barium, calcium, zinc, and magnesium. This test method provides a means of determining the concentration of these metals that gives an indication of the additive content in these oils.5.2 Several additive metals and their compounds are added to the lubricating oils to give beneficial performance. (See Table 1.)1.1 This test method is applicable for the determination of mass percent barium from 0.005 % to 1.0 %, calcium and magnesium from 0.002 % to 0.3 %, and zinc from 0.002 % to 0.2 % in lubricating oils.1.2 Higher concentrations can be determined by appropriate dilution. Lower concentrations of metals such as barium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc at about 10 ppm level can also be determined by this test method. Use of this test method for the determination at these lower concentrations should be by agreement between the buyer and the seller.1.3 Lubricating oils that contain viscosity index improvers may give low results when calibrations are performed using standards that do not contain viscosity index improvers.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.
