This specification covers chemical treatments and anodic treatments for preparation of magnesium alloy surfaces for printing. The procedure for preliminary treatment of surfaces using alkaline cleaners and acid cleaners are presented. Class I, type I (chrome pickle) surface preparation procedure is applicable to all forms of magnesium except certain special alloys containing silver. Class I, type II (sealed chrome pickle) surface preparation procedure is applicable to all types and forms of magnesium-based alloys, subject only to the limitations of class I, type I treatment. Class I, type III treatment is applicable to all types and forms of magnesium-based alloys except M1 alloy and certain rare-earth alloys similar to EK30A. Class II, type I (galvanic dichromate treatment) produce black coatings of good protective and pain-base qualities, and is applicable to all alloys and forms of magnesium, including M1 alloy. Class II, type II treatment is applicable to all forms and alloys of magnesium. Class II, type III treatment is applicable to all forms and alloys of magnesium, free from attachments or inserts of other metals.1.1 These practices cover two classes of treatment for preparation of magnesium alloy surfaces for painting, as follows:Class I—Chemical Treatments.Class II—Anodic Treatments.In general, the latter treatments are the more protective of the two classes. Mechanical (abrasive) treatments, solvent cleaning, alkaline solution treatments, and acid pickles not resulting in protective conversion coatings are suitable preliminary treatments only for metal to be exposed under mildly corrosive (indoor) exposures. When a high degree of corrosion protection and paint adhesion are desired, as in many outdoor environments, surface preparation by one of the above conversion-coat classes is necessary. The hexavalent chromium based methods given are not recommended as hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen.NOTE 1: Testing of Coatings—Quality control tests of coatings are frequently desirable, and these generally consist of exposures, with or without paint, to salt spray, humidity, or natural environments, with suitable procedures for assessing the degree of breakdown suffered after fixed time intervals. It is recommended that quality control tests of coatings shall be made as far as possible with high-purity material (for example AZ31A alloy),2 the inherent corrosion rate of which is relatively consistent from batch to batch and that precautions shall be taken to remove surface contamination before coatings are applied. Such contamination shall be removed by acid pickling to a depth of at least 0.001 in. (25 μm) per side.1.2 This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. 5.1 Rock for erosion control consists of individual pieces of natural stone. The ability of these individual pieces of stone to resist deterioration due to weathering action affects the stability of the integral placement of rock for erosion control and hence, the stability of construction projects, structures, shorelines, and stream banks.5.2 The sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate soundness test is one method by which to estimate qualitatively the durability of rock under weathering conditions. This test method was developed to be used in conjunction with additional test methods listed in Practice D4992. This test method does not provide an absolute value, but rather an indication of the resistance to freezing and thawing; therefore, the results of this test method are not to be used as the sole basis for the determination of rock durability.5.3 This test method has been used to evaluate many different types of rocks. There have been occasions when test results have provided data that have not agreed with the durability of rock under actual field conditions; samples yielding a low soundness loss have disintegrated in actual usage, and the reverse has been true.NOTE 1: The quality of results produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it and suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection/etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D3740 does not in itself assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors and Practice D3740 provides a means of evaluating some of them.1.1 This test method covers test procedures for evaluating the soundness of rock for erosion control by the effects of a sodium or magnesium sulfate solution on slabs of rock. It is an accelerated weathering test. The rock slabs, prepared in accordance with procedures in Practice D5121, are intended to be representative of erosion control sized materials and their inherent weaknesses. The test is appropriate for breakwater stone, armor stone, riprap and gabion sized rock materials.1.1.1 The limitations of this test are twofold. First the test is a simulation of freezing and thawing conditions using accelerated life cycling techniques. The test evaluates the internal expansive force derived from the rehydration of the salt upon re-immersion, an event that may not occur in some natural environments, to simulate the expansion of water rather than the actual freezing of water. Secondly, the size of the cut rock slab specimens may eliminate some of the internal defects present in the rock structure. The test specimens may not be representative of the quality of the larger rock samples used in construction. Careful examination of the rock source and proper sampling are essential in minimizing this limitation.1.2 The use of reclaimed concrete and other materials for erosion control is beyond the scope of this test method.1.3 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. Reporting of test results in units other than SI shall not be regarded as nonconformance with this standard.1.3.1 The gravitational system of inch-pound units is used when dealing with inch-pound units. In this system, the pound (lbf) represents a unit of force (weight), while the unit for mass is slugs. The slug unit is not given unless dynamic (F=ma) calculations are involved.1.3.2 It is common practice in the engineering/construction profession to concurrently use pounds to represent both a unit of mass (lbm) and of force (lbf). This practice implicitly combines two separate systems of units; the absolute and the gravitational systems. It is scientifically undesirable to combine the use of two separate sets of inch-pound units within a single standard. As stated, this standard includes the gravitational system of inch-pound units and does not use/present the slug unit for mass. However, the use of balances or scales recording pounds of mass (lbm) or recording density in lbm/ft3 shall not be regarded as nonconformance with this standard.1.3.3 Calculations are done using only one set of units; either SI or gravitational inch-pound. Other units are permissible, provided appropriate conversion factors are used to maintain consistency of units throughout the calculations, and similar significant digits or resolution, or both are maintained.1.4 All observed and calculated values shall conform to the guidelines for significant digits and rounding established in Practice D6026, unless superseded by this standard.1.4.1 For purposes of comparing measured or calculated value(s) with specified limits, the measured or calculated value(s) shall be rounded to the nearest decimal or significant digits in the specified limits.1.4.2 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded or calculated, in this standard are regarded as the industry standard. In addition, they are representative of the significant digits that generally should be retained. The procedures used do not consider material variation, purpose for obtaining the data, special purpose studies, or any considerations for the user’s objectives; and it is common practice to increase or reduce significant digits of reported data to be commensurate with these considerations. This practice is intended as an aid for establishing a suitable procedure for the heat treatment of magnesium alloys to achieve the proper physical and mechanical properties. Air chamber furnaces that may be either electrically heated, or oil- or gas-fired, are usually used for the heat treatment process. Each furnace must be gas tight, have suitable equipment for protective atmosphere, be equipped with a high-velocity fan or any other comparable means for circulating the atmosphere, and designed so that no direct radiation from the heating elements or impingement of the flame on the magnesium. It is also important that the furnace be calibrated before it is used initially and after any change in the furnace. Likewise, temperature-measurement systems should be regularly checked for accuracy.1.1 This practice is intended as an aid in establishing a suitable procedure for the heat treatment of magnesium alloys to assure proper physical and mechanical properties.1.2 Times and temperatures are typical for various forms, sizes, and manufacturing methods and may not exactly describe the optimum heat treatment for a specific item. This specification covers UNS M11311, M11610, M11800, or M16600 magnesium alloy forgings. The conformance of each material to the required chemical composition can be determined using any suitable method of chemical analysis. Samples for chemical analysis should be taken when the ingots are poured or from the finished or semi-finished products by drilling, sawing, milling, turning, or clipping. The variations in testing speed do not seriously affect the obtained tensile property values. However, care must be exercised so that the testing speed does not exceed the ability of the equipment to function satisfactorily. This specification covers high magnesium marine application aluminum-alloy in those alloy tempers for flat sheet, coiled sheet, and plate, in the mill finish that are intended for marine and similar environments. An inspection lot shall consist of an identifiable quantity of material of the same mill form, alloy, temper, cast or melt lot, and thickness, subjected to inspection at one time. The material shall be supplied in the mill finish and shall be uniform as defined by the requirements of this specification and shall be commercially sound. Each coil, sheet and plate shall be examined to determine conformance to this specification with respect to general quality and identification marking. One sample shall be taken from each end of each parent coil, or parent plate. Alloy-tempers are manufactured and corrosion tested for intended use in marine hull construction or in marine applications where frequent or constant direct contact with seawater is expected. The specimen shall be capable of exhibiting resistance to intergranular corrosion as indicated by an acceptable mass-loss when tested and shall also be capable of exhibiting no evidence of exfoliation or corrosion. Under metallographic examination, the microstructure of a sample from each production lot shall be compared to that of the producer-established reference photomicrograph of acceptable material, in the same thickness range. Each shipping container shall be marked with the purchase order number, material size, specification number, alloy and temper, gross and net weights, and the producer's name or trademark.1.1 This specification covers high magnesium aluminum-alloy products in the mill finish condition that are intended for marine hull construction and other marine applications where frequent or constant direct contact with seawater is expected and for similar environments (Note 1).
